I was told of different openings they had in sales, management, inventory control, etc. I filled out the app then was told that I'd receive a call back between 4-5pm with whether or not I'd get the 2nd interview to discuss details and salaries, etc. Was called at 5 and told, "Good news, I was able to get you a 2nd interview tommorow. I know it's short notice but come in at 9 for an afternoon "evaluation" that will last until 5, or 5:30 at latest, and you'll interview with THE manager.
I showed up the next morning, in shirt, tie, slacks as directed, to meet Michael who "had agreed to let me shadow him for part of the day to learn ALL the different aspects of the job" He instructed me to drive with him. It was a stranger, "trainee" named Carlos, Michael, and myself in his 1994 Beat up Blue Dodge Caravan.
We drove for about 25min to Del Valle where he asked me all about me, brothers, sisters, kids, money situation, etc. He was just another worker. He said he was his own boss, and we were "gonna climb a water tower, and hang a sign" How stupid did he think I was? He said to observe, and watch, that we wouldn't be in any board meetings today, so it won't be tough. I could ask questions, but not too many because he COULDN"T answer them since he's not a manager, and that after lunch there would be a "Test" over what I've learned.
Then we parked in muddy grass near a salvage yard, got down and removed boxes from the trunk with CHEAP imported Flashlights, Windup Radio/Flashlights, and Stuffed Animals by INNOVAGE. He said he'd be evaluating me on work ethic, attitude, customer service, etc. Handed me a box, and sloshed through the muddy grass to the parts salvage as he "pitched" a bunch of lies about these high retail value items that he was blowing out for less than half, and giving up to 3 free with each one. This continued over and over, and I didn't want to go anymore, for what?
They made me sign a release saying I wouldn't be compensated for time of evaluation. I played fair, for about 2 hrs, then stopped walking and walking and sweating. He asked if I could handle it? Maybe it's too much for me? Then when I told him this isn't for me, asked if I could have someone pick me up. I said no, I'll hang. Then he made me wait in the van with no AC over and over.
It was then 5:30, and still driving to new, further areas. I told him we needed to head back because I was told 5 ro 5:30, and had to pick up my 3yr old by 6:30 back south. He said, "Oh well... That's too bad. Not my problem, etc." I though he was joking but took some more stuffed animals, and the KEYS and walked thru a housing construction neighborhood trying to sell more.
When he came back, I demanded to be taken back. He said, "I'm running a business" "Your daughter isn't my problem" "We stay till 6:30 like you were told" I WAS TOLD 5:30max. I felt like punching him, but was not going to catch a case. He then added "it's not kidnapping, you can leave when you want" and that he didn't even HAVE to let me back in his car because of my negative attitude. THIS IS UNLAWFUL, UNFAIR, RIDICULOUS and must be stopped.
