We contracted with Classic Builders to build a new custom home after being promised the best quality with a commitment to schedule and budget. What we were getting when we fired Classic for breach of contract was poor quality, no commitment to schedule and escalating budgets that were out of our control.
It took approximately 6 months just to get a permit to construct. Our contract stated that the builder would make good faith effort to complete the home in 8 months. At just over 8 months the house was about 50% complete and still needed some rework.
Many of the allowances were set low to keep the initial price down knowing that we have to spend more money. Classic would then markup the increase in the allowance for profit and overhead.
One entire month was wasted just reworking framing issues. After about 5 months of construction we had lien placed on the property for non payment of one of the subcontractors. After 8 months and prior to firing we were receiving phone calls from subs who were paid.
At that point I hired an attorney and we executed a breach statement. Classic Builders then told all unpaid subs that they would not pay and for them file a lien on the property. Some did and this resulted in citations from the county for violation of construction code.
I would highly recommend that if you are building a custom home to stay away from Classic Builders.
