Thank You consumer complaints and Chris in San Diego (report summited 4/25/02)!!! I had the same exact story except my con-artist was a male and going to Cancun and a chance to win a 10,000 scholorship for school.
I really did not want to order a magazine because I have so many already but I ordered one anyway. "Matt" said the magazine Preschool Playroom was $24 for a 1 year subscription. When he started making the reciept out all of a sudden it was $34. I question the $10 processing fee which he said helps him get his trip. I advised him $25 was the most I could pay. Which he took.
During the transaction I was also asked some personal questions such as "Do you have kids?", "What type of work does your husband do?". I thought he might just be a personable kind of guy. I've worked in sales (with honest selling) and there are those type of salepeople out there.
After closing the door I (just like Chris in San Diego) went online and checked the Better Business Bureau who does not recommend this company. I was also happy I found the consumer complaints. The largest complaint seem to be about this company's selling practices and how people paid for magazines they never received.
I'm thankful I paid by check and not by cash which salesman "Matt" requested. I cancelled my check for only a $5 fee (sorry Chris). But it's better than paying $25 for something I probably won't receive anyway. I also now feel as if I got the better of them. I also found out the magazine I ordered is only 6 issues per year and can be subscribe to for around $19. So I wouldn't have gotten my moneys worth even if I did receive the magazine.
