I called an ad about a job, got an interview and was hired to demonstrate Kirby vacuums. I signed a contract as an independent contractor to be paid $125 for 3 days training, to be paid immediately after training. Also, there was a pay guarantee of $1600 per month.
We started training on Wednesday, to be completed on Friday and paid on Saturday. We signed a deal to that effect. A day and a half into the training, we were informed that we would not get our money on Saturday, but a week from Saturday. That was my first red flag. There is no need to hold back a week when there is no hours being counted and no withholding to calculate.
I finished my training and did my required 4 practice demos on Saturday and Sunday. When I went in on Monday, My file only had 3 of my demos listed. I was told that the guaranteed pay would be decided by my trainer since I hadn't finished my demos. I pointed out that I had finished and they just neglected to write one down. That was the second red flag.
I then found a different job that didn't require that I try to suck people into buying a $2200 vacuum cleaner. I called and informed the company that I would not be working for them.
Now it's Saturday and I call about picking up my check for the $125 promised for completing training and I am informed that I didn't finish my demos and therefore will not get paid. I'd say this is a scam. I'm sure it's a ripoff.
