On May 17 I contracted Robert Saffron, owner of Saffron Construction. $21,176.19, which represented 50% of the entire job, was given to him at that time, as required by the contract. He was due to start work on 8-4-03. During that time he was to have been working with Potter Architects on drawings for my demolition/addition. (My niece also contracted him with $50,000.00)
Having not heard from Robert and having very few of my messages returned, I decided to kill this deal in mid July. He said he needed to speak with his accountant, then 2 weeks later he need to speak with his lawyer about returning my money. Next I get a letter from the lawyer telling me that he was retained by Robert and to seize trying to speak directly with his client. I was assured the return of my money via his lawyer. When his lawyer finally admitted that this guy was up to something, I contacted the bureau of consumer affairs in Somerset county NJ. Shortly after that, early October, I received a call from the Somerset County Prosecutors office only to be told "this was now in the hands of a prosecutor because there had been so many complaints made recently".
On October 13, my niece called to tell me Robert William Saffron, Committed suicide on October 12. We have been unsuccessful in recouping any of our losses. We have been in contact through word of mouth with many other of his victims. We clearly believe that he had stolen at least $350,000.00 that we are aware of. As far as my niece and myself, we both refinanced our homes to do this work. My niece has 4 children and I am a single working woman. Thank you for any help and or support you can give us.
