Thank god for this website!!!
I get a call from this agency a while back and after they began to ask me for $257, I immediately said I was not interested and I do not trust what they are offering me.
I get a call again today - 12/29/04 and the offer was repeated:
You are qualified for a grant for $8000 - guaranteed, but can go as high as $25,000. All this for free, never pay back, get rid of your debt, etc... All I have to do is pay a $257 "processing" fee for the paperwork (which by the way is right there in front of her and ready for processing). When you are not convinced, they start to throw down their trump cards - I'll give it to my manager, who re-explains the fail proof plan and the GUARANTEED offer from the Federal Government of the United States and that I have been selected from a pool of only 5-600 individuals for paying my taxes.
For a while I thought, well maybe - condidering that questionmark suit guy on TV who says government money for free... So I played along, asking plenty of questions ofcourse. Like how is this guaranteed, why was I selected, and why is there a bloody $257 fee?
My real killer question came when I asked him where he was calling from, and he said Las Vegas, Nevada. Being of an indian origin, I have no problem identifying that all 3 people that I have talked to so far have an indian accent but american names - weird, huh? I asked him if this was an outsourced call center (being very familiar with the concept - I am from Bangalore, India), but he insisited otherwise. SOMETHING IS FISHY...
Then he says (the manager) that all he needs is to verify my bank account information so that we can have a location for the Federal Govt. Of the United States to perform a "Bank to Bank" transfer. I thought about it, and kept playing some of my same old questions... Verify your organization, there is no website, contact information.
Being at work - I called the 800 number he gave me and it kept saying that it was out of service... I put the speaker phone on and let him hear the message onto my personal cell... And he has the audacity to tell me "keep trying, this is just how the system works sometimes"... So I did it 5 more times...
So then, I am also sitting in front of 2 computers at work and use one of them to quickly Google his company - and for the love of organizations on-line such as this one:

LUCKY ME. How can the FBI get these people? I can't wait till he calls me back - I am going to tell him that I had the number tracked and the FBI informed, and that they are aware fo his organization and are currently just waiting to catch him in the act - and I don't know if they are listening in right now... (I am after all a federal govt. Employee!)
there is no way you should ever give out your personal bank information on the phone... If it is your bank calling you - they have that information.
