October I received a bill in the mail for an ad at yellowpagesonline.net for $600.00. I immediately called the number on the bill to inquire about it, because I don't remember signing up for it. I spoke with a woman there who said I signed up in August and played me back a recording of the "verbal -agreement", which was fuzzy but I did hear myself answering questions about an ad at yellow pages. The woman then said because the bill was past due I would be charged late fees, but if I paid today it would only be $600. I was very upset, the ad is just a Listing of my business, address and phone number and nothing else. I would never have agreed to that, if I had known. I told her I wanted to cancel the ad and I paid it in full with credit card.
Yesterday (February 20) I get a call about my past due online listing for $ 600 and I said no way, I cancelled that almost 2 years ago after i paid it. The woman, Shawna Atkins said they have no written notice of my canceling it and therefor it continued and I now owe for another year. And that if I had a letter of confirmation of cancellation I could send that in, but otherwise I was expected to pay it. We went back and forth on the phone about this. She said there were now late fees and interest but if i paid today she would waive those fees. I refuse to pay it. I called my lawyer friend and he said that they have no written contract with me and therefor I am not legally bound. I also filed a complaint with the FTC and the state attorneys office. With my state. This has been extremely upsetting, but I am relieved that I got help with it before paying yet another $600.
