Refused my attempts to return Christmas Tree

I purchased a Jaclyn Smith Christmas tree (7 ft. Cashmire pre-lit slim model) on sale for $79.99 Monday, November 12 and put it up in our dining room that same week. It is a beautiful tree and I had hoped to get many a Christmas seaon out of it. However, the lights in the top portion of the tree quit working the week after Christmas. I attempted to return on Saturday January 12 and the store on Donelson Pike, Nashville, TN would not accept, stating that seasonal merchandise could not be returned after 30 days and pointing to note on door (handwritten by store staff) that Christmas items could not be returned after December 25. I had the receipt and there is nothing on the receipt that indicated this nor is there anything on the web stating such. I would prefer to get the same tree, thinking that mine might be defective but the folks at K-Mart nor Sears would even consider that. I am very, very, unhappy with the way this has been handled and have vowed to never step foot in another K-Mart or Sears EVER. Very sad as my Mother was a 20 year employee of Sears, retiring in 1998 after going to work in a brand new store in Antioch, TN in 1978 which sadly has since closed.
