Consumer Report

This company is a scam! Do not call them under any circumstances.

I mistakenly called a number I thought was associated with Linksys support because I was having issues with my router. The person I spoke with was obviously Indian, which is not unusual for some company's tech support. But I was suspicious immediately; something just wasn't right, so I asked if he was an actual tech for Linksys. He assured me he was. I was still very suspicious but proceeded. He immediately directed me to logmein.com. Red flags went up, and again, I asked if he was indeed a linksys' tech, and yet again, he assured me he was. He quickly took control of my computer and told me I had been hacked, showing me a list of files that, supposedly, were malicious. He told me my computer was on the verge of crashing and required immediate attention.By then, I was more suspicious than ever and very nervous that I had let this person into my computer. When I told him I would have my own computer tech take a look at it, he began talking even faster, assuring me that no tech would be able to discover these files and that if I didn't do something immediately, my computer would crash. Eventually, I convinced him I was not going to pay him no matter how fast or how long he talked, and I told him I wanted him to log out of my computer. He said he had logged out and we hung up. But, of course, he hadn't logged out, and he began accessing files on my computer. Every time I pulled up logmein from the dock to close it, he quickly minimized it and continued accessing my files. When I was finally able to close logmein, I quickly learned he had corrupted several of my files, and they are no longer accessible.

I felt completely violated and was absolutely LIVID. I immediately got in touch with the real tech support for Linksys. They said VTechsquad was in NO WAY associated with them and they had heard lots of complaints about them overcharging for services.

I decided to call the VTechsquad company back and complain to management, thinking the tech may have gone rogue. It quickly became obvious that this was NOT a legitimate company. I was given the run around and told several times there was no record in their files of my earlier call and I must have been dealing with another company. I finally replied to "management" that I had redialed their number from the recent calls list on my phone, and although he may not have a record of the 18 minute call, I most assuredly did, and I was sure that my provider had a record of it too and that logmein would have a record also. At that point, he became a little more accommodating, telling me he would investigate the matter and offering to fix my computer problem for no charge. However, by that time, it was very clear to me that this was not a legitimate company, that what happened to me was just business as usual for them, and there was no way I was going to let them have access to my computer again.

I am very glad I didn't give them any money, but I'm especially happy I got away with as little damage to my computer as I did.
