Free Service with AOL is a rip off Herndon Virginia

When I purchased my Dell Computer I was told that 6 months of AOL service came with the computer. I wanted DSL through my local phone company but decided to try AOL since it was supposedly free. I called AOL and spoke to a representative and she got my credit card information but swore it would not be charged unless I ordered something through AOL.

Well, when the 6 months trial was coming to an end I would get pop-ups warning me that my FREE trial was about to end and that if i wanted to continue service with AOL I would need to call and update my billing information.

I called AOL and let them know that I did not want to continue my service with them and to cancel my account. I went online to view my monthly banking statement and there is a charge for 23.90 on my account.

I called AOL and spoke to a rep and was told that the cancellation dept would have to credit it back and cancel my account. I spoke to a rep in cancellations and she gave me a confirmation number (I will be sure to keep it on file for the rest of my life) and told me that billing (the dept a previously spoke with) would have to credit my account.

I called billing. Again. And spoke to another rep and he did not want to listen to what I had to say. He told me that because I did not submit a proof of purchase (which was never told to me in my initial conversation) for my Dell computer that they were actually back billing me for the 6 months of free service. Which is a lie. I believe the billing started after I canceled my account. He directed my to the AOL website with the keyword partner promotions. He informed me to submit a form and I may receive a credit. I was on the phone with this gentleman for over 20minutes and repeatedly requested to speak with a supervisor. He tried to ignore my requests and eventually stated that there were not any there.

I went on the website and went to partner promotions and it states that this form needs to be submitted within 30 days of purchasing a computer. I purchased my computer almost 1 year ago and when I called to find out information on this offer I was not told to submit anything.

I plan on calling AOL every day concerning this matter. I also spoke to my bank and once I sign an affidavit they will dispute these charges, which I found out had been coming out since July. I will also write their corporate office and contact my state's attorney generals office about this matter. From reading the entries on this website, this is not an isolated case.
