Rip off, confidence tricksters, claim that name provided to GAIA by a professional institution

I echo the other reports regarding GAIA on the consumer complaints pages. A membership associate from GAIA contacted me by phone from US, and claimed that I had been nominated for membership of their association. I enquired where they had got my name, and was told that their "research department" had obtained it.

On one occasion I was told that this had been provided by a professional institution of which I am a member. I was unsure how GAIA could know that I was a member of this institution if my name had not been provided by it and if it was not legitimate.

I asked for names of people who were members, and was given a few names. None of these people replied to emails that I sent to discover if GAIA was a legitimate organisation and I was told I could have no other names unless I registered as a member. However, two of the people (as I recall, an academic in Spain and a business consultant in Canada) did include GAIA membership in the CVs that one could view on their personal web sites.

The promise for the $2500 membership fee for 5 years was that my name would be provided to UN organisations, with whom GAIA claimed to work.
