Deceptive and Dirty Business Practices

Over a year ago I signed up for a three-month membership with classmates.com because I was trying to get in touch with an old friend. I received the email from classmates indicating that my membership would be on auto-renewal unless I changed the setting in my account properties to "manual". Being a person who doesn't like spontaneous charges appearing on my credit card, I immediately logged into my account and changed the setting.

Then I forgot about it... For a year. I never bothered to log back in to my account to ensure that my settings had been saved or that they had not been changed at a later date, for that matter. I didn't expect that last week I would see a charge on my credit card for $39 from Classmates indicating that my Gold membership had renewed for another year and that it was non-refundable.

I have no idea how to fight this company over this. I should have taken a screen capture when I made the change to my account and saved it on my hard drive for future reference. Has anyone else out there had this same issue with classmates.com? I find it hard to believe that I am the only one.

To say that their business practices as they currently statnd are shady is letting them off easy. But, if they are deliberately manipulating customer accounts then they ought to be shut-down for fraud.

I, like several others here, intend to report them to the BBB. While I will fight the charge on my card, I doubt it will do much good. I might as well cut my losses now and cancel the membership permanantly. I don't trust that changing my settings yet again will do me any good.
