In late April I called Compuserve to cancel my service. The representative, Shane Brook, advised me that since Compuserve had already entered the next cycle, I would be billed once more at the end of May.
Today, July 6, I received my Visa statment and there is another charge by Compuserve. I called to have them reverse the payment as it was obviously their error. The representative told me that according to their records, I had called in April but had accepted two free months instead of a cancellation.
In researching issues over the Internet I found that Compuserver employees recieve $11 for every cancellation attempt that they save. Furthermore, it appears that this tactic is common to others who have attempted to cancel.
I notified my credit card company. The representative there told me that this is very common with Compuserve and that they would be more than happy to handle the dispute.
To everyone out there.involve your credit card company so they can put some pressure on these theives.
The best way to keep this from happening - stay away from Compuserve and go with a local ISP. At least that way you can drive down to their office and demand your money.
