Massage Envy sells memberships. For a monthly fee you receive one massage per month. If you do not or cannot use your massage in any one month, they accrue. I travel quite a bit so my monthly massages accrue. After banking over 14 massages I put my membership on travel hold. When I returned and tried to book a time, they informed me that I had to take it off travel hold and pay the last month's membership fee. Which means that I am not using any of the ones that are accrued but purchasing a massage outright.
This is the umpteenth time I have had business issues with this company. Last time I put my membership on travel hold it "somehow" came off hold and another many months were charged to me while I was away. I tried to give a massage to a friend and had to argue about this. It was already paid for so why are they giving me such a hard time about this? When I finally won, they charged my friend almost $70 anyway, because the friend had been there before so they could not honor the membership price I was paying. Total ripoff as they already had the money for a full hour massage. She will never return.
Many of the therapists (mostly good people) complain bitterly about the company. I forget what they said they were paid, but I believe it was close to minimum wage and they do not get paid for the additional hours they do not have clients. So without tips they probably earn less than minimum wage.
The company is cheap on supplies, so the therapists often have to bring in their own supplies and pay for it out of the little they earn. One therapist told me this included cleaning supplies as well.
This is a company only interested in how much they can charge you, and they engage in deceptive practices to do so. Every time I have called in to finally use one of the massages I have "banked" I have to argue with them over the hold I put on my membership. THey now have over $700 worth of massages banked for me, and I am going to walk away from them unless there were interest out there in a class action against this sleazy company.
