When I got laid off from my job in April I also lost my health insurance because the company had not been paying the premiums and was not offered COBRA. The agent at the time said that FORTIS short term health was the way to go. We reviewed the FORTIS insurance application together and I revealed my past medical history to him because I was concerned with pre-existing conditions. He assured me that nothing in my past medical history would prevent FORTIS coverage. I had the coverage for three months until I got a new job with insurance. Unfortunately during the three month period I had a kidney stone attack which put me in the hospital for a overnight stay. The bill came to $8,000.00 and FORTIS refused to pay and even rescinded my insurance.
They said that I had lied on the application about my medical history and therefore was not eligible for the short term policy. I had not had any previous kidney stones but they said that a visit to a cardiologist for a heart checkup was a pre-existing condition. They are a big, big rip off as I discussed everything in my medical history with the FORTIS agent when he issued the policy. Can anybody suggest which way I can fight FORTIS on this. I just refuse to let it go.
