On 08/25 a crew working for Royal Caribbean purchased a SAMSUNG GALAXY 4S smartphone for US $425.00 from KLASS ELECTRONICS store. St Maarten and in general all stores in Caribbean's islands are popular shopping destinations bz all purchases (alcohol, jewelry, electronics) are tax-free.
The phone proved to be defective out of the box. It never worked. Been that the crew was living overseas (in Portugal) she was only able to return to the same store about 7 months later. The exact day the crew visit the store was on 03/28. The store did not accept responsibility bz the store warranty is only 30-days. However the device was still under manufacture warranty which is usually 12 months
The store sent the phone for repair to various technicians. However due to major defect on motherboard, the phone is beyond repair.in addition Samsung USA is not supporting the device since this model is not marketed in the US. On top of that the consumer paid in advance another US $80.00 for shipment to Portugal
Since this smartphone is an expensive unit costing US $425.00 and it proved to be defective right out of the box we reckon reasonable to either been reimbursed for the full amount or have the phone been replaced with a new device.
All phone & e-mail communication with the store owner has prove unsuccessful to reach an agreement. They acknowledge that Samsung is not covering the device (they don't say why...) and they hide behind the 30-day return-policy. However due to the fact that they are marketing their merchandise to people traveling and occasionally returning to the island we see this practice insidious at best
