On Nov. 30th and again on Dec 1, I contacted Sprint to ask them to please cancel my account as I am on a fixed income. I had been a "preferred customer" for many years and since my contract date was coming up on Dec. 11th 2008 I decided to cancel my subscription. I specifically called to cancel on those dates. (It was documented by the rep as a credit call, it was not. It was a cancellation call and by calling to insure the cancellation again the following day I don't see how they could say it wasn't)
To my surprise I was told that a "free phone" they had sent out last year despite our telling them we didn't want or need it now extended our obligation to October or face the prospect of paying a $200.00 early cancellation fee.
Exasperated, I called and emailed Sprint but could never get any resolution.
We already won a class action settlement against them this past year for selling us reconditioned phones as new.
When we received the phone we were charged over $200.00 for our "free phone", angry we contacted Sprint and insisted we weren't about to pay for a phone thay sent out against our wishes. They finally relented and credited our account.
So as you can see Sprint is once misleading customers by mailing "spare free" phones and then charging us for an extended contract.
I am seriously considering filing in small claims if I can find no other means of resolving this issue.
Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Since filing this letter with the F.T.C. I have since been informed of a class action lawsuit against Sprint for this very problem. I was also notified that Sprint's attempt to collect on what they call Early Termination charges" violates the consumer protection lawas of the United States.
