Okay, so I found a great deal on a recertified Xbox 360 on Buy.com. I had dealt with them once before, so I picked it up. They claimed a 14-day return and Microsoft warranty.
58 days after delivery, the audio and video went out, but no RROD, so I had no 3-year warranty from Microsoft.inside the package I got was a sheet of paper (presumably from buy.com) stating that there was a 90-day warranty and that Microsoft provided a 3-year warranty for RROD situations. So I called Microsoft, as I was well within my 90-day warranty. Microsoft told me (after 90 minutes on hold) that this particular unit was sold nearly 2 years ago and that I would have to pay the $95 repair bill plus shipping. When I told them that I had a receipt stating that I had purchased less than 60 days ago, they said that Buy.com was responsible for updating the system to reflect the new sale date of a refurbished unit.
I shot off an email to Buy.com, and got the standard form letter reply stating that I could not return, it had been more than 14 days. I shot another email to them explaining the situation in more detail and demanding a reply from a human that had actually read the email. I got a phone call a couple of days later, but was not at home when they called. I called the number back and waited on hold forever before being told that my warranty was 15 days, then 45 days, then 60 days. Then I was told that my claim would be escalated and I would be getting an email from them. No email, and that was 3 weeks ago. I sent them another email a week and a half ago, got the typical "we have received your email" email, but no reply again. I sent yet another email this morning and have received the same form letter, nothing else.
I am now looking into filing against Buy.com and Microsoft for breach of contract for failure to fulfill their obligation to repair or replace this unit. Updates are surely forthcoming.
