Dish Network
Non-existant cuatomer service

I am a new customer of Dish Network. I had a defective satellite receiver (the box). My wife called Dish Network customer - no - service line. After spending over 1 hour on hold she spoke to a person. After climbing the food chain to the 4th level (still low) she was told they would ship a new one via UPS and scheduled a technician to come to the house after the new unit arrived. I tried to have the Dish Network technician take the faulty box with him. He refused and stated company policy. The Dish technician said "Just call UPS and have them come pick it up. After we box, seal and label the package of course.

I call UPS and I am told there will be a $10 pickup fee. I climb the UPS food chain to the 4th level (low level here also) and was told that no person at UPS can or could waive this fee including their own CEO. This sounded OK but I still doubt it. The final person at UPS told me 'If you contact Dish Network they will simply call UPS and have the fee charged to them. Happens all the time."

I now proceed to contact Dish via their web site - twice. After a couple of days and still no answer to my e-mails my wife fears we may be charged an even higher fee by Dish. Dish emphatically states if not returned within their perimeters there is a substantial charge. She takes the package to her work place and sends it for no additional fees. This is not a Major inconvenience, yet it is an inconvenience for my wife.

At each step in this process people have suggested I either take the package to a UPS store or flag down a UPS driver, as they go past my house at least daily.
In each case I reluctantly explain that my wife works and I am a disabled veteran with a VA rating of 100% and I live in the country. The closest UPS store is several miles away.

I made a big mistake dealing with this company. Cable was much better and they weren't that great, except in comparison.

I was very fortunate to be under Dish Networks generous 90 day warranty.

If not within the first 90 days I would have incurred a several hundred dollar charge. The receiver alone was in the hundreds.

Typically, Dish Network prefers their own special fees. They have fees such as, live operator fee=$5, a transaction fee=$5, a pay-per-view automated fee=$1, and on and on and... Confusion at bill time is a plus for them.

The new receiver produces problems we had not experienced prior to the switch. We now need to reset the dish receiver at least twice daily.

On a little more positive note - I only have to endure this company for 15 more months. Watching much less television is probably a good thing.
