Today I got suckered into a very convincing scam. I was in the Bank of America parking lot in Mount Dora, FL on US 441 and I was about to walk inside to cash my paycheck when this guy in a green minivan with a TN plate shouted at me and said that he had some speakers to give away. I figured I'd check it out, so I walked over to the van.
The driver hopped out and, while talking fast about how he messed an order up, opened the back hatch and pulled out one of the Audiofile speakers. He continued to go on about the mistake in the shipment and how his boss will just keep the speakers if they take them back to him. He showed me this lamenated card, showing the retail value of the speakers to be $1200.
He asked $500 for each of them. I told them that there was no way I could afford that, so he told me to go withdrawl the money out of my bank account. I told him that all I had in the bank account was about $17 (which wasn't true) and that all I had was my paycheck ($395). He kept trying to get me to call a friend to loan me the money.
I started to walk away and his buddy jumped out of the passenger side and started shouting at the driver. He said he would give me both of them for $500, so I told him what I told the other guy, and that I just couldn't afford that much. So then he said he'd give them to me for $350. I said OK and got my check cashed.
When I came out, he had both of the speakers sitting next to my car and asked for the $350. I handed him $300 and said that that was all I could give because that paycheck was my last (and it was). He started telling me how much the speakers were again, so I gave him $320 and he accepted.
When I got home, I searched for Audiofile and found this site. Figures. I hooked one of to my receiver and of course it sucks. I feel like a real ass about it because earlier I saw a tan Explorer parked on the side of the road in Downtown Mt. Dora, with the driver shouting at the guy in the truck in front of me about selling something to him. Now I realize what it was. I hope I get the priveledge of running into these guys again in the near future.
