Why do we pay so much and recieve no service

I got a iphone 5 for chrismas from my brother that lives in Aus now after 3 months apparently my speaker broke so my phone does not ring. When i whent to
The menlyne istore the man told me that i need toe send it back toe Aus to be repaired. I have no complaine about him but i have a complain againts appel as a company. I have al the doc that i need like the order and proof of payment. Are al the appel stores not the same in the world. It is just sad that we pay so much money for a phone and then we do not get the high price service. Now i need to fix my phone for a cost of R700 and then my phone is no long under warrenty. Can someone help me. I think that this is very bad service from appel
