Received a voice mail on my business phone. Called back and spoke to a rep. "Dawn Anderson" who stated that I had an unpaid balance of $1,200 from 1994 from Bank of America. I said I remembered the account but stated that I had paid it back then, but didn't recall the collection agency.
She stated that she had a signed Federal Affidavit stating that it was a current debt and that they were contacting me to reach a settlement. If a settlement wasn't reached, she stated that they would report an unpaid balance to the Credit Bureaus.
I responded that I paid it, and I wouldn't pay for it again, and since it was 10 years ago I didn't know who I paid, or where my letter was stating that it was paid off. Basically, I got an "Oh well", we're collecting on it now.
I hung up, called back and asked for a "Manager" who stated the same thing. I stated that on credit reports for the last 3 years showed no negative entries for ANY creditor and he said "Oh, it's been sitting in a file until the last collector sold the debt".
I asked to see the supposed Affidavit and the supposed letters that they sent but miraculously I'd never seen, and he said he's fax it if I agreed to pay the acknowledged debt. Red Flag! I told him no, I'm not acknowledging anything. I just want to see your documentation. HANG UP! From him. Surprise.
Long story short, I searched the internet, came across this site, and then called back to try to get their physical address so that I could send them either a FedEx letter or registered mail and they basically hung up on me and only would give me their PO Box. Now if they really felt they had a case, I would see them giving me any info I wanted.
I feel for those that fall for their scams.
