5/20/10 @3:13pm:
I originally booked my relocation with a very reputable company, but then decided to do the move myself, along with friends. Then a sales person (Larry Levinson) of World Wide Van Lines LLC, {16192 Coastal HWY, Lewes, DE 19958} contacted me and asked me that if they were comparable to what it was going to cost me to make the move myself, would I use their company? I told him, ‘Sure.’
He said, based on the items that I listed on the inventory sheet, they could do the move for $1,000. (NOTE: when finalizing the move, Larry informed me that when the driver comes, not to pay anything until my things are delivered. Upon delivery, I was told NOT to give the driver cash; but to have a money order or cashiers check made payable to the company who was moving me).
6/3/10: I made NUMEROUS calls to Larry Levinson at World Wide starting on 6/3/10 through 6/4/10 (since I was supposed to be moving on Saturday, June 5th.)
6/4/10 @10:10am: Dispatcher, Kevin Lyles, called me to tell me that the company that was to be my carrier was Onyxx Movers. They were the sub-contractors that had ‘picked up’ my relocation job. Kevin gave me the representatives’ name, George) and said that George should be contacting me to tell me about the pick up. If not, I could call George.
@10:30pm: I called George that evening and he informed me that my move wouldn’t be taking place until Sunday so he had until Saturday to contact me; and Saturday it was. He said the driver would be at my place some time on Sunday. He told me not to give the driver cash, but to have a cashier’s check or money order made out to ‘Onyxx Mover’s’. He said, ‘That’s Onyxx with two x’s’.
6/6/10 @9:23am:
George called and said his driver’s truck broke down and he didn’t know when they would be able to come pick me up; but he would call me.
I started making calls to World Wide Van Lines…Larry Levinson and Kevin and dispatch, to no avail.
6/7/10 @ 7:30,8:30,9:30,10:02,10:40am; 1:00,1:30,1:45,4:50,5:00pm:
I made NUMEROUS calls to World Wide Van Lines and left messages, to no avail.
@5:29pm: Frank from dispatch called me to say that he spoke with the carrier, George, who promised Frank that I would be picked up on 6/8/10 in the afternoon.
6/8/10 @6:35pm:
Truck #1/Charles called to tell me that he didn’t know why his boss would tell me that he would be picking me up at 2pm or even 7pm. He wouldn’t be able to get me until Wednesday; so what time was good for me? I told him I had people who had taken off from work and rented a truck for one day, which had turned in to a 3-day deal, so I would call him back. He said he was in Virginia, about an hour away from me.
@8:30pm:
I called Truck #1/Charles back and told him that as early as possible; 7:30/8:00. He then informed me that he was in DC and said he would call me around 7:30am to get the directions to the house.
6/9/10 @8:50am:
Received a phone call from Truck #1 (Charles) to say that he had another stop to make and that he should be to me shortly.
10:10am: Truck #1/Charles and another employee arrived. He did not have an inventory list, so we did a walk around. Charles informed me that in efforts to be honest, unless I had a ‘GUARENTEED’ delivery date, my belongings wouldn’t be delivered to me until some time at the end of the next week. I told him I had to think about it.
10:48am, 11:45am, 7:30pm, & 6/10/10@8:35am: When looking for my house (four days AFTER the original date), he left a voice mail on my cell phone. I called him back from my home phone and neglected to check any of my voicemails until I made it to Columbia, TN (Thursday afternoon).
@7:40pm: George and his driver arrived and George said, “Let me see what you have to moved.” I said, “I listed everything on an inventory list with World Wide. They didn’t give that to you? ” He said, “NO! This is all they give me.” So I showed him all of the items that had to be loaded by his company. (NOTE: my friend, Kelvin Liles and his cousin, William Liles had rented a pick-up truck to get me and to take some of the things that I would need sooner than a week). Upon completion of the tour (which ended in the garage), George handed me some papers and said, “You need to sign these so we can start loading your stuff.” As I’m trying to read them, and I’m asking questions, he keeps telling me to ‘just hurry up and sign the papers.’ I told him that I wanted to read what I was signing. I then was unable to make out some of the words on one of his company’s forms. I asked him what it said. He looked at it, said, “I don’t know and I can’t read it without my glasses.” I got up and proceeded to go back in the house, with the papers in my hands. I was in the kitchen reading the forms and after about 5-minutes, George came in the kitchen and gave me the inventory sheet that he had completed and asked me, “What’s the problem? ” I told him that I wasn’t comfortable with how things had been going so far with his company – not knowing when someone was coming, then not knowing an approximate date that I would get my things; so I wanted to read and be clear on what I was signing. George then said, “I know, you probably don’t trust me.” I immediately told him, “NO! I don’t trust you. You say one thing, do something else; you didn’t follow through to let me know what the status of my move was. But when you thought I wasn’t going to utilize your company, you found time to call me two times, within 1-hour. I then reviewed the inventory sheet and told him some items that he had failed to list. I asked him what kind of discount I would be receiving for all of the problems and inconveniences, and overall un-professionalism, and he told me he would have to check with Headquarters.
@11:15pm: Everything was finally loaded; Onyxx movers left and Kelvin, William & I left about 15-minutes later.
6/10/10 @8:37am: I called George back and told him that I hadn’t checked my voicemail and I asked him, what did he need. He said that he had my items weighed and the weight was 1,900-lbs. Over the 4,665. So, it was going to be an additional $677; bringing the total to $1477 owed to him. I asked him, “What about a discount for all of the problems incurred and the un-professionalism? ” He told me he would be able to take of ‘$100’. I asked him if he said ‘$100’. He said, “Yes. That’s all Headquarters said I could do.” I told him that was fine and asked him when the next time that I would hear from him was. He told me 24-hours before he delivered my things.
(cont.)
6/10/10 @12:30pm (approx): The first two messages that George left were both checking to make sure that I was still going to use his services. He informed me that he had another driver that would be in the area around six - or seven-o’clock that evening. He then said, ‘I would have my items by Tuesday; no later than Tuesday. The next message that he left (11:45am) said basically the same as the 10:48am message, but, that ‘I would have my items on or BEFORE Tuesday. The third message that George left was when he was looking for my house, at which time I heard the owner, George's message to me asking for the exact location of my residence. He inadvertently forgot to turn his cell phone off, allowing me to hear the rest of the conversation between him and his driver, as they were looking for my house. Apparently out of frustration, George says, "Just pull in this parking lot. I don't have time to keep wasting on this NIGGER!" The last voicemail from George (on 6/10/10 @8:35am) said that he had my items weighed and the weight was 1,900-lbs. Over the 4,665. So, my original price of $1,000 (less World Wides’ $199.98 fee) was now going to be an additional $677; bringing the total to $1477 owed to him.
6/14/10 @7:30pm (approx): I called George to find out when he would be delivering my things to me on Tuesday. He told me that there was no way he would be able to bring my things tomorrow. He informed me that he was in Indiana and that his truck was broke down. I then asked him why he would leave me two voicemails, within an hour of each other, telling me that he would have my items to me on Tuesday and then in the other message, that I would have my items on or BEFORE Tuesday; but then when he was picking my things up and rushing me to sign paperwork, he failed to be forthcoming and let me know that he had left messages telling me that I would have my things by Tuesday. He then said that ‘he didn’t know that his truck was going to break down.’ I then told him, “So let me get this correct, you are now telling me that the messages that you left me are now null and void and you will NOT be delivering my things tomorrow? ” He said, “That’s right. I didn’t know that my truck was going to break down! ” I told him that was irrelevant to me; I just wanted to make sure that I was quoting him correctly; that I would NOT be getting my items on Tuesday as he had said in two voicemails. I then asked him, when he would be delivering my things. He said he didn’t know, but he would call me 24-hours before delivery.
6/16/10 @4:18pm: I called World Wide to speak with Frank, but I had to leave a voicemail.
@4:57pm: I called World Wide back, and was able to speak to Frank. Frank informed me that George told him that I would have my things either Thursday or Friday.
@7:17pm: George called me to tell me that he should probably be able to deliver my things on Thursday or Friday (6/17 or 6/18).
6/17/10@6:35am: George called me to tell me that he was in Nashville (which is about 1-hour from where I live).
@8:35am: George called to tell me that he was 30-miles away;
@9:09am: George called to ask if it was an apartment and what was the apartment number. I informed him that although his paper work did not contain my ‘complete’ address, I had written the apartment number on the agreement; it was F97.
@9:15am: Upon his arrival to my apartment, my uncle (William Washington) and a friend of mine (Holly Stewart) were present. George said, ‘Ok, give me my money.’ I asked him to bring my things in, and he said not until he received payment. I then asked him again about what discount I would be receiving. He told me ‘$100.’ I then played the voice mail. He said that wasn’t him, he doesn’t use words like that because he’s a professional. I told him that he needed to learn how to operate his cell phone and that I didn’t appreciate his comment and I felt he needed to do better than $100. He stormed out of the apartment. While he was outside, he began to say that people use that word on the street all the time and that comment wasn’t meant for me. I contacted the police and we were at a stand-still.
George said that unless he got all of the money that he was supposed to get, he would not unload any of my things. When one of the officers asked him what he would do with my things, he said he would leave and they would be in storage. ‘That’s what the contract says! ’ I told him that since he had told me COUNTLESS times that he was coming and then didn’t show up, nor did he follow through and even keep me aware of what the status was of my move, I didn’t know for sure when he would show up, I had not taken enough money out of the ATM. I had withdrawn as much money that I could withdraw from an ATM in one day ($400). He again threatened to leave and put my things in storage.
I spoke with Frank of World Wide who assured me that this type of behavior was unacceptable and that he would speak with a supervisor/manager at World Wide and that someone would be calling George. When I asked George if he had spoken to World Wide, he retorted, “NO! No one has called me! ” (NOTE: he didn’t even have his phone on his person)
My father arrived and said that he would go get money, but he too was only able to get $400. George said that he was not unloading my things until he had all the money that the contract said I owed.
Again, I spoke with Frank of World Wide and asked him if someone had spoken with George, because George said that no one had called him. Frank said that they had called and that he would check to make sure that someone talked to George.
I went to a bank to attempt to cash a personal check, but because it was an out of state check, they couldn’t do it. I returned and told George that I wouldn’t be able to get any more money until the next day. He said that he would get a hotel room and bring my things then. He then asked me what time would I have the money. I told him 6am; he said, ‘Oh, I’m not getting up at six-o-clock! ’ He then said he would call me when he got up. I asked George if he had spoken to World Wide and he told me, “Yes! I talked to them! ” I asked him, ‘What did they say? ” He stared at me and again angrily replied, “They told me to work it out with you! ”
After talking to my parents, they said they would loan me the money and I could write them a check; but to get my stuff and not put it off until the next day. I called George and told him that I was borrowing the money and what time could he meet me back at the apartment. He said, “Ten or eleven.” I said, “Tonight? ” He said, “No! Ten or eleven in the morning! ” I told him thank you very much and hung up. I then called him back and told him that I wanted a copy of every document pertaining to my move. He became irate and started yelling that I didn’t need to worry about that! As he continued to yell, I told him, ‘Thank you and God bless you.’ And I hung up.
6/18 @10:09am: George called me on Friday morning at to tell me he would be there at 11-o’clock.
@11:15am: George showed up, and after about 5-minutes of sitting in his truck, he got out. I said ‘Good morning George.’ He said, ‘Good morning sirs.’ (Talking to my dad, Herd Johnson and my friend, Alfred Jackson). He then turned to me and said, “Give me my money.” I said to him, “I need the copies of all of my documents that I asked you for yesterday, please.” He said, “I have them, but you can’t have all of them! ” I said, “Why not? I asked you for copies when you came to my house in Maryland, but you didn’t have any for me. So I’m requesting that I get any copies pertaining to my move.” He then said, “I have the copies you can have! But you can’t have copies of everything! You can’t have copies of the inventory sheet until we unload your items and you sign it! ”
He gave me the copies and asked him what his last name was. He bellows, ‘I’m not obligated to tell you my last name! ” I said, fine; now ‘Let me go in my apartment and get your money orders filled out; but you can stay here.”
I returned with the money orders, put them in hands but he refused to take the money orders and he began yelling. “What is this? ” I told him, “one thousand dollars plus three-hundred, seventy-seven dollars equals one-thousand, three-hundred, seventy-seven dollars. That’s how much you said I owed you.” George said, “You are trying to be funny! Look at this! You are not supposed to sign this! And look what you did! You signed your name all over it! It’s too big and no one will cash these! ’ I began yelling, “That’s the way I always sign my name! You can ask anybody! You can look at any of the paperwork that you have and see that’s how I sign my name! ” He kept yelling, ‘I thought I was funny and he was out of there and my stuff would be in storage! ’ My Dad tried to give him the money orders explaining that the money orders were good and that he would be able to cash them. George shoved them back in his hands and began walking toward the truck and I followed him. I told him I'd go cash them and bring him the cash, he was still ranting and raving that I thought I was slick. He couldn’t get in on the driver’s side, so he walked over to the passenger’s side. I followed him and figured that if he didn’t have his paperwork, he wouldn’t leave.) I reached to take my envelope from him, thinking that he wouldn't leave w/o his paperwork. He shoved me, I shoved back, and he snatched the envelope, tearing it. My dad and Al came to where George and I were and George released me and backed up. My dad and Al asked him, ‘What was he doing? ’, and told him that he that he shouldn’t be putting his hands on me. He immediately started yelling, “I didn’t touch her! I didn’t put my hands on her! ”
He got in the driver’s seat of the truck and old his employee, to get in the truck. With his windows rolled up, I again begged him not to leave; I apologized, and told him that I would go get the money orders cashed. He pulled off and had I not moved out of the way of the truck, he may not have stopped.
@11:45am (approx.): I kept calling George and World Wide, but to no avail. George eventually answered the phone and said he would come back when I cashed them. I called him back and eventually he answered the phone again. He then told me that he was waiting for Headquarters to call him and tell him what to do. I apologized again and told him my dad had the cash and that I would call the police to come back over, and that I would stay in the apartment and wouldn’t even talk to him. He then said he had to hear from Headquarters, because he feared for his life. He continued saying that, ‘I had too many people over there and he didn’t know who they were and he felt unsafe and that his life was being threatened! ’ He continued on, saying, ‘He was in his truck trying to calm down because he was just so upset and scared for his life.’
@2:10pm: I finally got in touch with someone at World Wide (by trying numerous extensions) and was finally transferred and connected to Darryl Lawson. He said that he would contact George and that he would call me back in 10-15-minutes.
@2:20pm: Darryl called me back and informed me that George feared for his life and safety and he had already put my things in storage in Nashville. Therefore, he gets to contact me (when HE decides) to let me know where to send payment and then he'll tell me where my things are and how I can go get them.
6/20@1:30pm: I called World Wide representative, Darryl Lawson and left a message.
@1:35pm: Darryl called me back and said that George finally contacted World Wide late Sat. (6/19) and told them that I need to send $2077 to him and then he'll tell me how & where to get my things. The amount went from $1377 because he added on tariffs & other fees. When I asked Darryl if my things were even in Nashville, he said that George told him that they’re about 20-miles away from me. He said that George had no use for my things or any reason to lie. (NOTE: Nashville is approximately 40 miles).
