I too was on my way to SMC website for more info. I had already checked the BBB and FTC. Nothing to raise any suspicion so far. I am not easily swayed by ads, classifieds, infomercials etc. I was actually looking for the SMC website to locate an address for SMC to run it by one more agency. The Florida Dept. Of Consumer and Agricultural Affairs. This is when I came across this site and read what you all had to say. If I was on the fence before, I am not now. This actually would have been the first time I ever actually sent money to a company.
I have always stopped short of doing so, mainly because of good instinct and lack of money to toss around. This is not to say I don't have a junk drawer full of fliers and brochures sent to me in response to 800 numbers I've called requesting info. But in the end, for the reasons stated above, I have never taken that next step... Tossing my money into the unknown. It's much more satisfying to hold a receipt in my hand to the electric bill I just paid avoiding disconnection of power in my home, and to know that right now I may not have much money, but what I do have is going where it's needed. It feels nice to have no regrets. This time, I may have come close to either regret or success. I guess I'll never know.
But I do know this: I feel alot more successful with my lights and phone on, than I would without them, standing on a payphone with an SMC representative, demanding to know why this hasn't shown up yet, or being told by a call center rep who's cigarette break was two minutes ago, that they don't know what I'm talking about or there's nothing they can do for me. Thank you all for the benefit of your experience.
A word of advice to those who may read this: I'm not saying don't do this, because the bottom line is I haven't tried SMC yet, so I have no "horror story" to tell. I'm just not in a position to take this kind of risk right now. You need to evaluate your present position and ask yourself, "Can I handle this not working out the way I expected?"
Only YOU can answer this question. Not Tom Bosley on TV who doesn't need to worry about HIS lights getting cut off, not the BBB, not even me. Only you know what your situation is and what kind of financial hits you can or cannot sustain. Either way, educate yourself beforehand. It can't hurt. It may take some time to investigate a company, but hell, it costs nothing to do so, and can actually make you money by keeping you from blowing it in the first place! Best of Luck.
