American Medical Writers Association
Tuition Ripoff

Egistered for workshops at AMWA's annual conference. AMWA members must take credit workshops to obtain a certificate in medical writing. There is a discount if you are a current student. I registered online for the workshops and sent email proof of my student status during the early registration period. AMWA's policy is that you can't receive credit for workshops unless you register during the early registration period. The week after I registered, they sent me an email stating that they did not receive proof that I was a student. I asked them to double-check, and they saw that my email went to their junk mail folder. I requested them to email me a registration confirmation, but they refused. They said to wait for it to arrive in snail mail. When the registration confirmation finally arrived in snail mail a couple weeks later, it stated that I wouldn't receive credit for the workshops since I registered late. I thought this was an error that could be easily corrected. When I called, however, I was told the registration date goes by how long it takes them to process your registration (which can take 4 weeks) instead of the date you actually register online. I requested a refund since noncredit workshops do not count toward the medical writing certificate, but they refused. They said I do not deserve a refund since my email went to their junk mail folder, and it is past the refund date. They did not care that I did not receive the registration confirmation in the mail until after the refund date. If they would have sent me an email registration confirmation like I requested, I would have been informed about not receiving credit early enough to cancel the workshops for a refund. Not only did they refuse to refund my $500, but they were also very rude to me on the phone. My bank charged back the money to my account since I didn't get what I paid for, but then AMWA disputed the chargeback stating that I paid for noncredit classes instead of credit classes.
