My Wife balances the checkbook with every purchase. She has the checkbook set up for her 3 Debit cards also. So she rarely loses track of a penny. So you can imagine the shock of a missing $40. We immediately ordered a statement from the issuing company (in this case, Michigan State as the charge was made to her Child Support card). The statement showed a charge for 39.95 for a Golf Digest Subscription and prize award.
Well, neither of us golf. I am almost homebound, and she cannot be in the sun for long periods. So, where did this charge come from? After arguing with the Friend of the Court (Issues Child Support in Michigan) they finally gave a phone number. When she called the first time, it was midday and she got an answering machine. The next day she tried again, and someone called back and asked if we were enjoying the free gift. Enjoying??? Actually, she ordered the forty bucks back to the account. This transfer took 14 days as opposed to the 5-7 they promised.
We are beginning to think it started as a junk mail. Have you ever seen the clause "Just do nothing and your account will be activated." Be cautious about how and where you use your credit card information. Evidently this information is for sale up to and including all your personal information. This now includes any items you bought in the past, where you surfed in the past 90 days, and which credit cards you use the most. All this information really helps the advertising companies to single you out for the Special Offers. You know then as ('targeted' junk mail.)
