In response to a phone call, my grandson's aunt Mary ordered some magazines from America's Choice Readers Service. She does not read well and did not listen to or understand the offer. Her income is Social Security and Disability. Mary called the company and explained that she wanted to cancel because she cannot read the magazines and does not want them. She asked them to stop sending them. They refused to take her phone cancellation.
The company has sent her a bill this month for $174.08 plus $8.70 late charges. That's bad enough, but when I called to complain they said she owes them $58.27 every month for 15 months. There is no way to cancel the magazines now since she did not send in the first bill marked CANCEL.
This is fraud in the worst kind. They claim they already paid for the magazines and cannot recoup the money that she owes them now, even if she never reads or receives another magazine. The only option is if she dies someone can FAX her death certificate to them.
America's Choice Readers Service should be closed and prosecuted immediately. It is not a service that anyone needs and has hurt many poor gullible people.
Thank you for the opportunity to report this incident.
