Attempting to collect on a bogus debt

Merchant's Credit Guide Co. (MCG) sent a letter to my mother, who happens to be 81 years old, informing her that they are attempting to collect on a defaulted account which was purchased from Household Bank. They are doing this on behalf of CFB Financial III, LLC.

My research indicated that 1) CFB and MCG are one and the same and 2) the whole thing is bogus. My mother never had any dealings with Household Bank in her entire long life.in fact, by obtaining a credit report, we discovered that Household Bank, a purveyor of low interest credit cards for people who don't need such debt, made approx. 6 "soft" inquiries about my mothers credit to one of the credit bureaus.

I have sent them a letter on her behalf demanding proof of debt and will follow up with more correspondence with copies to the FTC and the NY State (her state of residence) Attorney General's Office. Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Since discovering this site and the reports on MCG, I have been following it very closely.
