Deceptive Pyramid Scheme Ripoff Scam

Zomg! I wish I knew about this site before going to the 2nd interview! These guys are very deceptive on their words and how they conduct business. Highly recommend everyone to stay away from this illegal company as stated in the recently released (815 ILCS 505/) Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.

Here's how my 2 days went:
-I received a call from GQ Imports and they wanted me to come in for an interview that same day. I was very excited as my first intentions of the company was that they designed new promotional merchandise; they state they sell items for WB, Universal Studios, Crayola, Mattel, etc.

So, I went in and had to fill out a small application and attach my resume. Just like the other postings on this site, they play dance music in their small lobby.

Remember, this is in a suite and not in an actual building; most legitimate businesses have their own building. Anyways, I was interviewed by a guy named Nick, and later found out that this guy flies all over the country trying to motivate and hire the same bread of people they are. During this interview, he told me that they are looking to hire 5-6 candidates out of 40 people and will give me a call that same night.

I thought it was odd that I would receive a call that same night because as I was waiting in the lobby earlier, the receptionist was setting up interviews for the following day. Nick also told me that if I was chosen as a candidate, that the 2nd interview will only be 4 hours long and the job requires little to no travel.

When I got home after the first interview, I already had a message on my answering machine from GQ Imports stating that they wanted me to come in the next day for a 2nd interview. They called my house 10min. After the interview and felt it was strange for that to happen. I thought I had sold myself to them and might get the job as they really seemed to like me. I needed the income, so I decided to give it a shot since I sold myself in the first interview.

This is where I find out how deceptive they really are. I remember their online postings stating, "PAID TRAINING". When I went in for the 2nd interview the next day, they immediately had me sign a contract stating that this day will be an observation/interview day and I will not get paid. There were 4 other people there for the 2nd interview as well; young to old. As I was waiting, they were calling candidates into the office one-by-one and then walking out the front door moments later. Came my turn, I was greeted to an individual that would be my trainer. I was to observe and ask questions throughout the day.

I followed him to his car outside and started to wonder what was going on. I really should have stopped there, but I needed a job. I got into his car and was greeted by another worker that was coming along. Apparently, this second guy in the car was from a Boston location. Also, the car was packed inside, to the top, with random merchandise giving the driver minimal view of the road. At this point, I was starting to get a bit concerned, but I was going to obtain answers soon.

The two people I were with were very young, 21 and 27. Trying to keep this short, we headed to Chicago in a low-income area north of Cicero. As what was suppose to be 4 hours, turned out to be a 9 hour brutal walk of going door-to-door, business-to-business with no lunch or breaks, selling old overstock merchandise for normal or more retail value. These guys did not care who they invaded. Any place that had a sign that stated, "No Solicitors", we went into and started soliciting. The product that we were selling, and later found out how crappy they are through consumer reviews online, was these RC Spin Pro cars; which can be bought on overstock.com for the same price.

Every single person my trainer talked to stated that these cars were worth $40 in stores and that this was a promotion offer for only $11. They even had these crappy portable steam-irons and Scooby-Doo puzzle book for the same or higher retail value. Throughout the day we fooled, according to my trainer, a 1:10 ratio of people that bought these products. My trainer even sold a broken one to some poor guy.

Also, they intentionally leave the receipt booklet in the car so that they have a very low return ratio, thus making more money. As we walked through the low-income Hispanic and African American neighborhoods and spending 45-60 seconds in each business, there were no breaks or lunch; which I know by state law is illegal. These products were also being sold tax-free; which is also illegal. All in all, we were cheating people out of their money and I was feeling bad about it. I was stuck walking the streets of the city until sundown.

As we drove back, I was taught their altered "pyramid scheme" plan on how one achieves their own office within 2-3 years with an income of $125k/year and no more field sales.in my thoughts, I now knew that this was a for sure scam. Their plan works as follows: Learn Marketing and sell crap to people, then move up to a trainer to train one person under you, then move up again with 2 people under you, then move up again with 4 people under you, then you obtain an assistant manager position which takes 3 weeks, then you become a manager ready to open a new scam location, and the process starts all over again forming one big pyramid scam around the whole world; as stated by my trainer. Also, the jobs becomes commission pay after a certain amount of days (30-90 days) and up until you reach manager position (2-3 years). Brutal...

When we came back to the office, I was told there was going to be a 3rd interview. My trainer told me that they are only looking to hire 1 candidate out of everyone. The previous day, Nick told me that they were going to hire 5-6 candidates. I was being deceived again and now the lies were starting to show through. As I waited in the office again for my next interview, my trainer pulled me aside and asked me a few questions that would put me above the others. Being an Eagle Scout and black belt, I really thought I had the leadership skills that would make it over the others. Even though I was not comfortable about how they were conducting business, I went into my third interview being honest and truthful about what I saw and felt (as a true and honest leader does). After about 2min., I was escorted out of the building. I basically told him that I have moral values and looking for a company that has a strong foundation. I was told they were looking for people who have no moral values, are not a thinker, and are just a doer with lots of energy. He had no comment on selling broken items to consumers and solving corruption within the company. I was completely shocked as I knew it was not right to be declined a job for having moral values, being a leader, and thinking.

I wish I knew about this website before, but from now on I will never fall for such a scam job again. I also hope that these scam companies go down. I will spread the word by mouth about this awesome website to prevent others from falling into the hands of these illegal businesses.
