I started Kaplan Jan 25th. The first semester ended, and I wasn't so sure about the school. The quality of the education is pure CRAP. You attend these mandatory classes where the teacher and other students talk about weather, and their day. Nothing more then you can do in a random chat room. Only difference at the end of the class the teacher would remind you of what is due at the end of the week. You were given a bunch of assignments each week to complete. Reading a topic and writing 2 paragraphs and then responding to 2 other students post. What kind of education can you get from this? The second semester started and my husband got military orders to Japan. How could I continue going to an online school when I would not have access to the internet? I had to drop my 2 classes. I spoke to a Senior Academic Advisor when I dropped to tell her what was going on. She said if I faxed her a copy of my husbands orders and marriage certificate that they would waive my 2nd semester charges and dropping fees. I faxed the information and didn't hear anything different. September I start getting statements from citibank for my student loan, they did not remove the charges. I had a balance of 3,460.60 for just 1 semester and 10 days of the 2nd. When you have 7 days to drop without penalty. Now when I registered they told me my total out of pocket for the entire schooling would be 6,000. My account was already 3,460.60 just for 1 semester. How much would it have really been if I would have got the degree from Kaplan. They LIED BIG TIME.

OK, so I make a complaint to the BBB. Stating I was unhappy with what I received for education and how I was charged for class and fees for an unexpected issue, where I couldnt attend any longer. The resolution was for a refund for the total amount I owed to CITIBANK for the student loan of 3,460.60. Kaplan's Compliance and Quality Assurance Specialist responded to the BBB complaint with the following statement.

"We have thoroughly reviewed Ms. Patricia's complaints and she is correct in that an online university is not ideal for everyone. We empathize with Ms. Patricia and as a result processed a refund to her account. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to contact me."

SO, I'm thinking they settled with me and they were refunding me for my complaint amount of 3,460.60, since she stated nothing different, and she stated online university's isn't for everyone. I was wrong. I gave them a month to refund my account. Since they didn't ever apply any refund, I contacted the Compliance and Quality specialist back. She stated they did apply a refund on 7/27/06. HOW FUNNY! My complaint was made on 9/21/06 her repsonse was on 9/22, and she wants to talk about a refund was made& on july 27. That was money that kaplan owed back to me anyways for an amount they received from citibank, but I did not attend the full term. UNBELIEVABLE.

SO now they are saying they're not going to refund me, even though that is the response they made to the BBB to my complaint. That I attended 10 days of the 2nd semester and said that was 75% attendance. SO 10 days = 75% of the semester. I don't think so. Especially when they state you have 7 days to drop a class without penalty. I was only a few days behind that. This is crazy. She also emailed me the following

"We have exhausted our research capabilities to justify any KU error, which would agree with your position. You were charged for the two classes you completed in January and partial responsibility when you dropped, per all published policies. KU now supports over 25,000 students who are actively and productively completi ng their college degrees. It is again unfortunate that you did not appreciate or enjoy your experience at KU, however KU cannot entertain refundi ng students their tuition charges based on their opinion. You did receive two A's in the January term, which can be transferred to a college or university of your choice."

Ok, the response to my original complaint stated " she is correct in that an online university is not ideal for everyone. We empathize with Ms. Patricia and as a result processed a refund to her account".

So now they don't want to give me a refund. I contacted the lady that told me to fax my documents and I won't be charged. She states " I would like to help you with this, however I don't have a copy of the deployment orders saved on my hard drive I don't even remember if I ever received them."

So its my fault that she can't find the documents. What kind of business are these people running? They are total scammers, who can't keep their story straight. I would like to make it world known of their practices, so no one else goes through this, or waste their time trying to get an education from Kaplan, when it would be much cheaper and the same quality of education if you just went to a local library and read text books about your degree of interest. SURE you wouldn't get a degree that way, but I have found their degrees are useless anyways, 3 companies I'm interested in, do no accept Kaplan degrees. Also, I can't transfer the credits I earned the first semester to 4 local colleges, they don't accept Kaplan. Maybe only kaplan accepts Kaplan credits. Now I owe money, and the credits are USELESS.
