In the spring of I enrolled at IADT, a visual communications school in Pittsburgh. I was seventeen when I signed up, and had no idea that I had to watch for con artists on every corner. When school started in late summer, I did not have a professor for two of my classes, and another one was so full that not all of the students had chairs.
I attended for three days of classes, did not see any major improvement, and decided to quit. I went to the office of the guy who had been showing me around, and told him that I wouldn't be coming back the next day. He said ok, and that he would take my name off of the register. A couple of months later I got the bill for $800 through the student loan people. This didn't seem too unreasonable, so I thought I'd just pay it and that would be the end of it.
Now, four years later, I need to get my transcripts from IADT, and they claim that I owe them over $4000, and they want it paid in cash before they'll give me my transcripts. They are saying that I attended for an entire semester, and they printed me attendance reports that say the same thing.
I need to get the transcripts, or I won't be able to attend a real school in the fall.
I went to work in a factory after i quit the school, and the human resources manager at the factory (who happens to be a very nice guy) was able to find documentation that shows I could not have been in school on several of the days that IADT claims I was there. I was miles away, assembling windows. Doesn't this sound like outright fraud?
If anyone has advice for me, if a lawyer would like to help me, or if someone has more info for me, post a comment here. Thanks!
