My complaint begins in the middle of March. I lived in the dorms on campus, Hugh Poland Hall. There was a resident there (who's name I'll leave blank) that had continuously harrassed my boyfriend and I. This was a coed dorm and needless to say, a lot of the girls were harrassed by the young men living there. Back to my story, my boyfriend was an RA (resident assistant) at the time and had written the stalker up for constant drug abuse in the dorm building and excessive drinking since it's a dry campus.
The guy started harrassing me to make my boyfriend mad and had written obscenities with graphic and violent content on the pictures on my door of my friends and I. I had enough and went to the Dean of Students, Howard Bailey. I stated my case and he accused me of being irresponsible in letting this get out of hand the way it had. Even though I did nothing wrong to this guy, I thought I could ignore him and he would go away until he started threatening me and my boyfriend. And Dean Bailey told me I was being irresponsible and treated me like I was crazy. I became furious and left his office thinking I could handle this situation by myself since he was about as helpful as a pile of sh*t.
The threats continued and it got so out of hand that every day for a week, when I walked into my room, my clothes were thrown all over the place and my pictures had been messed with. I went to the WKU Police station and filed a complaint against this guy and said that I wanted to file harrassment charges. I gave them my written statement and I thought that would be the end of it... I was wrong. Turns out, the police just gave him a verbal warning and told him to move out of the building and banned him from any on-campus housing facilities.
Woop-dee-doo! Haha This didn't do crap! All the guy did was stand out in the parking lot of the dorms and wait for me every day. I had to reroute my entire day just to avoid him! This went on for a couple of months and then in May, the Katie Autry murder happened. She was raped and burned alive in her dorm room just 3 floors below me. How scary is that? When this happened, the school refused to tell any of the students what happened, even the parents. But when the reporters got a hold of it, someone leaked out information. The president of WKU tried his hardest to keep his ass out of hot water, but when I went to report my case again to Dean Bailey, the week after, he refused to hear anything I had to say.
2 weeks after the Katie Autry murder and finals week, I moved back home to Lexington and that was the best decision I ever made. So please, parents, don't send your kids to Western Kentucky University with the intentions that you think it may be a safe school. Even though Katie's parents sued the school for negligence, WKU still remains to be a crime invested campus. I know, because I attended classes there for 2 years and during the entire time, I had 3 stalker cases and 2 poorly handled situations that could have been prevented by the Dean, himself, but he isn't good for anything. Neither is the on-campus police. Don't ever filed a report with them if you intend on action taking place.
