Today we were contacted by a man by the name of Jason Parker, with Grant America. He proceeded to tell us that we were to be one of 200 recipients of this years $5000 taxpayer grant from the federal govenment.
He told us that the money would never have to be paid back and was not going to be taxed.
He told us we would receive a guide with legal documention and the names of the other recipients of the grant.
Later in the conversation he told us that we would need to pay a $249 processing fee to be electronically debitted from our checking accout to which he already had the account # and routing #. Then I got scared.
He then assured me that it was not a scam and in the packet we would receive a $500 refund check to cover the cost of the processing fee.
So, I agreed. After verifying my info on a second call, this one automated, I started thinking and with my knowledge of previous govenment grants for my education I realized that grants are considered taxable income.
I proceeded to call my bank to ask them to put a hold on the transaction. The banker told me to call the better business bureau. So I did.
Then, the very FIRST words from the BBB's attendants mouth were "Offering government grants, thats a SCAM"
Do not fall for this like i did
After calling the BBB i called the customer service number for Grant America and attempted to cancel our previous request and I was told that I would need to call back tommorrow since their computers do not update automatically
And i will
I will edit this post tomorrow to let you know if I was able to cancel the transaction
