Obrien Garage Doors Bait and Switch Advertising scam

Knowledgeable technician; However - I contacted this company as a result of one of their advertisements that they distributed. The advertisement included various items/services; such as: "Garage Door Tune-up $39", and 20% off any service call, etc.

It also said 'Family owned & operated Since 1985". When I called the number listed, I immediately was connected to a 'call center' type operation and person - That made me 'wonder', "if this is family owned" - why would a call center be answering and not a live person immediately. It may be family owned, but is it run like a family owned business with personal pride in its service.

I can not say whether their service/repair is good or bad, I suspect it is probably ok to good.

However, I did NOT like their 'methods' of charging once they were at my house.
The tech first said that it was $39 Per door. Ok, I can accept that although considering 'what' he had to do to correct my problem/concern, I could Not and did not accept a 'tune-up' on the second door.

First I described my concerns - which really was nothing more than over the years the 'noise' of the motor or drive screw had become louder when you put the door up or down. I was concerned if a problem was 'developing' in the motor and some possible preventive maintance might allow it to last longer.

Once I described the noise factor, the technician immediately got some special heavy duty garage door grease and put it on the entire length of the drive screw of the door. Then ran the door up and down, and the excessive noise was solved. That's all it needed.

It took him all of two minutes to do that. I asked him if there was anything within the motor that I should be concerned about or that he should check since the door openers were over 10 years old. He said no.

I was ok with the $39 charge because he solved my problem and answered my questions, and that was what I had asked him to come out for.

He then told me it would be $39 for the second door - to do the same thing. I said, no thank you. For $39 I can now go and buy the type of grease you are using and do it myself for a lot less than $39.

After I said that, then he said he would grease it for just $10 extra. I said ok. I would later go buy the grease and take care of this problem in the future myself.

Then, he tried to 'sell' me on replacing the rollers that run in the groves of each door as it goes up and down - that the bearings were worn, and that he could replace them with new, better quality, lifetime warranty bearings - for $150 each door. I said no thank you. Then, he dropped the price to $130 per door.

Then, he said $130 per door, And he would not charge me for the "service call"... Wait a Minute! WHAT "service call"! I contacted your company in respond to your ad which said "Garage Door Tune-up $39".. Regular $87!

How much is the Service call? $47 was the answer... Let me think about that - $39 special tune-up, Plus a $47 "service call" = $86.00!! Gee whez; I am saving $1!! Do I Smell a "Bait and Switch" scam here? Smells like it to me!

I told him that the lady on the phone said NOTHING about a 'service call' charge on top of the $39 special tune-up, absolutely nothing. I made it clear to her that I was calling specifically about the 'special' that they were advertising.
I also made it clear that I was not going to pay an extra $47 for a 'service call' fee that I had Not agreed to.

He went back to his truck and called someone. He was on the phone for more than five minutes, came back and again tried to get me to agree to the extra $47. When I would not, he went back out and called someone again, then finally come back and said ok - $39 $10 for greasing the other door (equals $49), then he wrote me a receipt for $50 Cash (yep, rounded it Up).

I paid him. Thank you O'Brien Garage Doors - but would I recommend you, even if you do know how to service/repair/or install doors - NO Way! I do not trust your business practices!

BTW - BBB in Fort Worth, TX has your rating listed as an "F"
