Jiffy Lube
Come on now

Is it really necessary for Jiffy Lube to maximize their profits to such an extent that it discourages the use of any manner of real analysis in the scope of their customer recommendations?

The poor chap that had the misfortune to speak to me and make some robotic recommendations, was treated to an earful of what I thought of his recommendations.

You see I happen to know quite a bit about what is really needed and what is not needed, unlike the poor fellow I was talking to. He was simply quoting to me the recommendations shown in my owners manual using the severe driving column.

He suggested that I replace the air filter on my engine, which Jiffy Lube had sold me, because it was now two years old. I was astonished, had he even inspected it? If he had inspected it, and still recommended that I change it, well that would make things even worse in my eyes. You see, I only drive about 3,000 miles a year in a relatively clean beach city environment. So this air filter had filtered a total of 6,000 miles worth of pretty clean air thus far and was at least two years old - (it may have been on Jiffy Lube's shelf for another year or two, who knows?)

So what was he saying to me really? That the air filters that they sell are of such poor quality that they will disintegrate after a couple of years? Or was he suggesting that I had entered and raced my car in the Baja 500?

He also recommended that I change my transmission and rear differential fluids, which had been changed by them about 3 years and 9,000 miles ago.

You don't replace your tires just because your owners manual, severe driving column, recommends that you should. No, you actually take the time to inspect your tires, right?

Perhaps I'm being a bit too hard on them? I guess what I'm really suggesting is that both the customer and Jiffy Lube use their common sense when considering what needs servicing, and not to simply treat the manufacturer's severe driving guidelines as gospel.

Lazy Mechanic
