My wife and I were in the process of getting quotes for a replacement roof this week. On Monday evening, a young lady knocks on my door and announces that "her company is doing work in my neighborhood" and asked if I would be interested in any work. Normally I tell these solictors "NO" in a hurry and close the door on them. However, I'm in the market for a new roof, so I asked the young lady if her company did roofs. She replied that they did and we set an appointment with a salesman / estimater for the following day.
On Tuesday, two Reynolds Exteriors employees show up. They proudly display their samples and their binder full of "I love Reynolds Exterior" letters supposedly written by customers. The sales pitch lasts over two hours during which time they do their best to build fear in us over using any other company. They insinuate that the roofing material manufacturer won't stand behind their warranty and that my homeowners insurance company will look for reasons to deny future claims unless I have my new roof installed by a fine upstanding company such as Reynolds Exteriors.
So we get through all the BS and I tell them I just want the price. My wife and I knew they were going to come in high and both of us were guessing around $12,000. They finally showed us the price quote and it was over $27,000!!! My wife and I were stunned, shocked, and in total disbelief that they would quote a price like that. Neither of us can remember what the last 3 digits were as we could never get past the $27 thousand dollar part. Maybe it was $27,000 or maybe it was $27,995; neither of us can remember.
Just so you know, our house is a 2100 sq ft ranch. We had a total of 5 quotes and all 5 companies used the GAF Timberline shingles so materials were nearly identical. We have 4 quotes that ranged from $6400 to $7400 and Reynolds Exteriors came in at over $27,000 for a normal 30 year roof.
We got rid of them in hurry once they showed us the $27,000 plus estimate. They did not even leave a business card of copy of the quote; my wife and I guessed they were too embaressed or ashamed to do so.
I do not know how these people sleep at night when they spend their days trying to take advantage of people like that.
If you live in the Hampton Roads area of VA, Reynolds Exteriors may very well come knocking on your door. I would reccomend you use extreme caution if and when dealing this company. If they treat you like they did me, they will waste hours of your time trying to get a simple estimate, use fear tactics to sell, and end up presenting you a price quote 4 times higher than their competitors.
