This is somewhat complicated, so please be patient.

I would recommend anyone who has a problem with their air conditioning system be very, very careful when dealing with this company. We have been UA customers for 15 years here in Sarasota and never had a problem until last year.

Near July 4th weekend our A/C system died. We called UNIQUE AIR as we always have and requested someone come out and take a look at our unit. We knew it was old and would need replacing soon. UNIQUE AIR sent a tech out and his conclusion was that the unit was leaking freon and would need to be replaced as soon as possible. He suggested that he could fill the unit with freon, but it would only last a day or so before it would need to be refilled. If anyone has ever been in SW Florida during the summer, they would know how hot and humid it is here. To have your A/C system die is absolute torture.

In any event, we agreed to have the system refilled until they could get a salesperson out AFTER the July 4th holiday weekend. Once the tech left, we were satisfied - the system worked. The next day, however, just as the tech predicted our system began blowing hot air. This required another call to their service dept. We also requested to have a salesperson contact us as we knew the unit needed replacing. We were told that the entire staff was off for the holidays & wouldn't return until the next week. Not a big deal, but UNIQUE AIR was charging us for a FULL FREON REFILL every time they came out. After this second refill, we decided to contact another a/c company to get a second opinion.

We contacted the people at Tri-County A/C and they sent a tech and a salesperson out that very day. The tech opened up the unit and described the leak we had as "minimal". He claimed that there was absolutely no reason to have UNIQUE AIR out there as many times as we had and that, once they fill it up, it should be good FOR ABOUT A WEEK! We ordered a new unit (which took 5 days to get) and in the meantime our air blew cold the entire time with NO FURTHER NEED TO CALL SERVICE.

All I can surmise from this is that UNIQUE AIR was NOT filling up our system as they had claimed and were charging us FOR FULL FREON REFILLS each and every time they came out. As consumers we have no way of checking the quality or validity of their work - so beware!

UNIQUE AIR subsequently sent us numerous bills for these supposed "full refills" totaling somewhere near $200. We've called to dispute this numerous times but they have subsequently reported us to THE CREDIT BUREAU. I believe these people tried to rip us off and when they didn't get their way, they have attempted to screw up our credit. I have no way of clearing this from my credit file and it will remain there for seven years. This is a form of extortion to the consumer and it will be a very cold day in hell before they get a dime unless they can explain themselves. They just flat out lied to us. I have the techs and the salesperson from Tri-County who will gladly vouch for us in court if it should ever go that far.

Make sure you get a second opinion from someone other than UNIQUE AIR if your system goes on the fritz. I just don't trust them anymore.
