Several years ago while building a deck onto the back of our house, we thoroughly (or so we thought) searched for the best decking option. We were looking for something which would not splinter, and would be relatively low maintenance. The TREX Corporation had some awesome advertising with promises which looked like their product fit the bill. After living with their decking for one year, I can tell you that it certainly did not live up to its promises, and does not fit the bill we paid.
We invested quite a bit of money in comparison with other potential decking products, thinking that it would pay off down the line in satisfaction. The TREX company promised a beautiful deck with very little maintenance and instead we got a deck stained throughout with spots of black mold. Our deck needed to be bleached down every time it rained in order to look decent. This was not an easy, low effort job, so we often would live with the unsatisfactory appearance. When the TREX Corporation was contacted, they said that this was normal and there was nothing they could do about it. They would not even send a representative out to look at our deck. Since then, we have read several articles which have stated that mold was a problem with the TREX product, and that is why they changed the way their product is now constructed. We talked with a TREX representative, asking him if they could give us any discount towards replacing our decking with their new and improved decking. They would not even help us in this way.
We have now replaced our decking with a similar product called CxxxxDek. I am still outraged that a company like TREX would not even try to meet us half way in solving a problem which was caused by their inferior product. They spend a lot of money in advertising, but obviously very little money to back the promises they make. CxxxxxDek, by the way, has maintained its appearance much more satisfactorily in the first year compared to the TREX we had, and the newer TREX our friends have. I hope the TREX Corporation will reevaluate the way they stand behind their product and treat their costumers.
