The Movers Overcharged, Late, Held My Belongings Hostage, Ruined Furniture, Hired Homeless Man To Carry Stuff Up the Stairs

I have to admit that I was moving on short notice to accept a new job and went with the first company that was available (end of the semester rush, everyone's moving, no one else available).

First, they showed up 2 hours late.

Second, when they arrived at my new place with my stuff they told me it would be it was going to be 300 dollars more then I had been quoted.

Third, even though I had repeatedly been told that I would be able to pay with a check by the office manager (or whomever they have answering the phones at any given moment) they decided to hold my belongings hostage for cash... On a holiday weekend. So I had the lovely experience of trudging across the french quarter in flip flops (yay blisters!) trying to scrounge 800 dollars (fun) when most ATMs have 100 to 200 dollar limits AND your bank thinks there's something fishy going on when you're withdrawing large sums at a variety of atm's so they put a fraud alert on your card (which really is a good thing in theory) so you spend the next half an hour on hold explaining to your banker that you really are who you say you are and you really do need that much cash.

Fourth, when they finally did start carrying stuff up to my place they managed to destroy a sofa that I'd bought less then a year ago.

Fifth, not only did they destroy my sofa, but they managed to damage my brand new front door - because they did not have the appropriate tools to take it off the hinges and force my sofa through the opening at an unnatural angle. (Funny how the service I hired to move me out of that place had no problem at all getting the sofa out without touching the door.)

Sixth, at the beginning of the day I had two bookshelves, but by the end I apparently only had one, because "The Movers" packed carelessly and destroyed one of them.

Seventh, (and final) I also admit, it was a third floor apartment, but they knew that the first time I called so they should have been prepared - but they weren't so, they apparently thought it was appropriate to hire a homeless man off the street to carry my things up halfway through the move... The homeless man was actually nicer and more professional then "the movers", he was far more careful with my belongings, and fixed the front door that "the movers" had nearly wrecked.in the end I tipped him but not "The Movers."
