Ripoff Two Professors' 6-Month Fight With Warrantech

My girlfriend and I are both professors and may thus have made at least MORE progress getting a claim paid by Warrantech than most. Specifically, after a month of fighting them and being told multiple lies which they admitted to us were "mistakes" in writing, we received two written assurances that an HVAC repair claim of ours would be paid in full.

On the other hand, we have yet to see a single dollar of money from them and after contacting multiple AG's offices and state real estate bureaus we've only gotten them to promise payment of 1/2 of the claim. Notably, they do not even follow up with AG's offices in a timely fashion!

That said, we do have some suggestions for others who may be fighting them too:

First, as mentioned in another report, the address in Texas doesn't imply that that's where they're actually licensed. The North Carolina Dept. Of Insurance lists them as chartered at the following address and phone number in CT, and we've just now begun to pursue complaints against them in that state.

350 Bedford Street Suite 203
Stamford, CT 06901
(203) 352-8800

Second, if we hadn't both had PhD's we might well have believed two initial denials that they made about what our contract does and doesn't cover. They eventually admitted both of these claims were false, and their current justification of non-payment concerns a third (also transparently false) claim.

The first specific thing that they did was to "mistakenly" lecture us about how our HVAC unit wasn't covered by their LEAST comprehensive contract. Whether or not anyone actually has that contract, we had a much more comprehensive one that did cover the HVAC.

The second specific thing that they did was to insist that we didn't understand the fine print of the contract we did have — specifically, they claimed that it didn't cover "corrosion" at all. While that certainly sounds like the sort of fine print that a contract MIGHT contain, and while we thus almost gave up at that point, in poring over the fine print we realized that corrosion absolutely IS covered. (As with the previous issue they've since apologized for their mistake.)

Their current misrepresentation, as made in a letter that we THINK they sent to the AG but that the AG hasn't yet received, involves quoting a part of the contract that clearly applies to the OLD HVAC system as if it applies to the NEW HVAC system... They're thus claiming that they don't owe us any money at all, but due to a) their call center director's mistakenly having promised us payment in full in writing (i.E., only after the threat of lawsuit, etc.) and b) their having authorized full payment for the services in a fax to our contractor, that they are now willing to pay half of our claim as a "gesture of goodwill."

Finally, anyone interested in media coverage or a class action suit against them should look into the CONTRACTOR angle as well. We've got some written responses from their CEO about numerous misrepresentations on their website (mostly, but not exclusively, in the contractor section), and we'd be delighted to share it!

Good luck to everyone!
