Solvit sells a heating system service contract which appears to provide only a 10% discoung on labor and parts. Similarly priced service contracts from heating oil companies cover all labor, and most major parts. This contract was sold to me over the phone, and charged to my credit card, without my having the benefit of a contract in my hands to review.
On my first service call I was billed $312 for an ignition transformer that is sold for $69 at a local parts store. I was billed $114 for a filter (that does not fit properly), that the local parts store sells for $39. These costs were in addition to the $176 cost of the service contract. My heating system failed again within three days, with exactly the same symptoms. I called a reputable service firm who replaced the oil pump, and have not had problems since.
Also, while the service technician was here, he was attemting to sell me a new humidifier for $800 after indicating my humidifier was not working (it is).
