National Express van lines gave me an estimate for a list of things to be moved that amounted to $1298. I was finally charged $4300. I moved the things on the list and additional things amounting to approximately 500 pounds.
The estimate was for $. 42 a pound. What I wasn't told was that for every pound over the low estimate I would be charged $. 72 a pound.
I was bullied into accepting a binding estimate the day of the move. I was not given the materials they are legally required to give me, I was told I could pay with a credit card when I got an estimate and then I was told that I wouldn't be able to take delivery unless I agreed to their binding estimate (for 3000 pounds more then the non-binding estimate) or pay cash before delivery on the balance. It was a Sunday and I had agreed to take delivery that night. I couldn't pay in cash. So I took the binding estimate, figuring that I'd work it out later.
Some things were damaged. I have yet to see claim reports.
I was charged for packing that was actually packaging furniture (which was supposed to be included).
I was harassed for a tip.
After two weeks of arguing they have offered me $928 to go away.
Before this I have offered them the fair price for the move. I have repeatedly told them that I would be satisfied paying them $. 42 a pound for the 5760 pounds they say my belongings weigh. This would amount to them giving me $1800.
I don't think I'm being unreasonable.
I haven't decided whether or not to take their money. I'm waiting to see if the release they want me to sign is unreasonable. I'm also allowing myself a day to calm down and take stock of things.
Please, if you're moving, be careful. Don't let moving companies get away with charging you ridiculous amounts.
