Hammond Screens installed a screen enclosure that was not per the Broward County building code.
The aluminum material that Hammond used for the screen enclosure was a thinner wall material than the code requires and Hammond failed to bolt together the top center beam of the screen enclosure.
Hammond blames the thin wall aluminum columns they used, on their supplier Town & Country Metals of Fort Lauderdale. Hammond states that their supplier knows that they are shipping aluminum columns into Broward County - they should know the code - so it is not Hammond's fault if the material is below the code requirement.
Hammond blames the building inspector for the top beam not being bolted together and for not verifying the materials used. Hammond states that the building inspector gave them an 'approved' final inspection so therefore there is nothing wrong with the product they supplied.
The Plantation Building Department states that 'They can't check everything, so they require a certain amount of trust in their contractors to do the right thing.'
The Engineering firm (LandTech of Fort Lauderdale) hired by Hammond to sign and seal the screen enclosure plans, states that he relies on Hammond to follow the code.
Hammond Screens Enterprises defended their high price that they charged when they sold me the job - based on the expense of the current building codes.
So if you don't want the same thing to happen to you. I suggest you climb to the top of your screen enclosure to make sure they have bolted the beam in place and that you make sure they are using the correct wall thickness of alumium materials.
