Straight Talk cancellation, refunds, number transfer, unlocking and disputes: what the company's own terms say (checked October 6, 2026)

These are the terms and channels Straight Talk publishes today, read on October 6, 2026, so you can compare them with what a representative or retail clerk tells you. Straight Talk's Terms and Conditions (Version 202609, copyright 2026 Verizon Value, Inc.) are the contract between you and Verizon Value, Inc.; the posts on this site about Straight Talk are mostly dated 2009 to 2013, so many describe older plans and phones.

Where to contact the company. The Terms name Straight Talk Customer Care at 1-877-430-2355 for activation, service and warranty help; the help center at support.straighttalk.com lists the same number (as 1-877-430-CELL) and a "Chat with Support" button. The contact page at straighttalk.com/support/contact returned an "Access denied" message to our browser on October 6, 2026, so its hours and any other channels listed there were not read. The home page header shows 1-866-664-3878 under "Join today. Call us at"; that is a sales line, not a stated complaint line.

Account registration. The Terms say that if you elect not to register an account at activation, the company may not be able to authenticate you as the valid customer, and that "If we are unable to authenticate you, you may lose access to your account."

Cancelling or leaving. The Terms say that if you do not like a change in terms "you can cancel at any time or simply not renew your Service." Service runs in plan cycles in which a month equals 30 days; the Terms say that if you do not redeem a new plan before your Service End Date "your Account will be deactivated" and you may lose your phone number. They also say "Plans have no cash value and are non-refundable" and that no refunds or discounts are given for unused service that expires, unused service if the phone is lost or stolen, or plans bought that are not compatible with the phone. The help center lists Auto Pay questions (for example, whether there is a fee for cancelling Auto Pay); we did not capture those answers, and we did not find a separate "how to cancel" article in the help-center topic lists checked on October 6, 2026.

Moving your number. The Terms say that to "port out" your number to another provider you need the Number Transfer PIN Straight Talk provides plus certain account information, and that once the number transfers "your Straight Talk Service will be deactivated immediately and you will lose any unused Service days remaining in your Plan." For Auto Pay, the Terms say new plans are purchased and redeemed "up to 72 hours prior to your Service End Date," so a renewal charge can occur shortly before a planned port-out. The help center has a "Transfer number" topic for porting a number in.

Returns and refunds for devices. Section VIII of the Terms says Straight Talk "does not allow returns or provide refunds for any SIM Kits or Plans." For a device bought at Walmart, "your purchase is subject to Walmart's return policy" and Straight Talk "will not process the return of any Straight Talk product sold to you by Walmart." For a device bought from straighttalk.com the Terms give thirty (30) days from delivery for an exchange or refund; the buyer pays return shipping, the device must come back in like-new working condition in its original packaging, and a refund can take up to thirty (30) business days. The Terms add that the credit for a returned device "will not include any shipping or delivery costs you were charged or incurred for purchasing or returning the device."

Unlocking. The Unlocking Policy (effective July 31, 2026) says that for devices activated on or after January 20, 2026 the device must have 365 days of active and paid service, and for devices activated on or before January 19, 2026 it must have 60 days of active and paid service. The page says a fee cannot be paid to unlock early, and the unlock timer pauses during a suspension for devices activated on or after January 20, 2026. The policy does not apply to bring-your-own devices.

Fees and network terms to read before you buy. The Terms say that charges may include a "Reg and Telco Recovery Charge" that "isn't a tax, it isn't required by law," and that "effective November 1, 2026, the Reg and Telco Recovery Charge will be set at 7% of eligible plans' monthly service charges." The Terms also say plan rates and features "are subject to change without notice or obligation" in one section, and in another that the company will give notice, where possible 14 days, before changes that negatively affect service. On data, the Terms say some carriers prioritize their own customers' traffic over customers of a non-carrier brand, so at busy times and places a Straight Talk customer "will experience increased latency," and that Straight Talk "reserves the right to modify, suspend, cancel, interrupt, discontinue, terminate or reduce your data throughput speed without notice." The Terms also say that if a single line's data use in a plan cycle exceeds "the average amount of data consumed by the top 0.5% of users on the Carrier's network during the preceding six-month period," the company "may reduce data speeds to your device to as low as 1.5Mbps for the remainder of the cycle." The Terms also list reasons the company may limit or end service without notice, including using the service primarily outside the coverage area or as a home-broadband replacement.

If the company does not resolve it. Section I of the Terms requires arbitration before the American Arbitration Association or an individual small-claims action, waives class actions, and requires written notice of a dispute at least 60 days before starting arbitration (to [email protected]). The Terms say Verizon Value will reimburse the AAA filing fee at the conclusion of an arbitration you actively prosecute, and require "proof of payment to the AAA and a completed IRS Form W-9" for the reimbursement. You can also raise issues with government agencies; the Terms say agencies can seek relief for you where the law allows. To file an informal complaint with the FCC (porting, billing, unlocking, service), the FCC's Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center takes complaints online and at 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322). Deceptive advertising can be reported to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and many consumers also use their state attorney general's consumer-protection office.

Government actions naming TracFone or Straight Talk: FTC data case (2015) and FCC consent decrees (2023, 2024)

FTC case on "unlimited" data (2015). On January 28, 2015 the FTC announced that TracFone agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges that it "deceived millions of consumers with hollow promises of 'unlimited' data service." The FTC's complaint alleged that since 2009 TracFone had advertised plans for about $45 a month with "unlimited" data under brands including Straight Talk, Net10, Simple Mobile and Telcel America, but throttled or cut off data after fixed amounts in a 30-day period (generally slowing at one to three gigabytes and suspending data at four to five gigabytes, according to the FTC). The press release says TracFone was also barred from further deceptive claims about mobile data plans and must clearly disclose any limits on data speed or quantity, and that consumers who had a Straight Talk, Net10, Simple Mobile or Telcel America unlimited plan before January 2015 could file refund claims. The stipulated order states that TracFone "neither admits nor denies any of the allegations in the Complaint, except as specifically stated in this Order." The order the FTC filed with its complaint provides for a $40,000,000 monetary judgment; the CourtListener docket for FTC v. TracFone Wireless, Inc. (N.D. Cal. 3:15-cv-00392) shows the stipulated order signed by Judge Edward M. Chen on February 20, 2015. The allegations concerned the plans of that period; they are not findings about current Straight Talk plans.

FCC data-security consent decree (July 2024). On July 22, 2024 the FCC Enforcement Bureau announced a settlement with TracFone Wireless, Inc. covering three data breaches between January 2021 and January 2023 in which third parties exploited vulnerabilities in the company's application programming interfaces. The Bureau's order (DA 24-481, adopted July 19, 2024) lists the ten brands TracFone operated in that period, including Straight Talk, and says the breaches exposed customer information such as names, billing addresses and certain account details, and that threat actors completed unauthorized port-outs; the counts are redacted in the public version. TracFone agreed to pay a civil penalty of $16,000,000 and to adopt a compliance plan and information-security program with API protections and SIM-change and port-out protections. In paragraph 19 of the consent decree TracFone "admits for the purpose of this Consent Decree and for Commission civil enforcement purposes ... that paragraphs 8-13 contain a true and accurate description of the facts underlying the Investigation. No other admissions are made by TracFone." The documents checked do not say how many Straight Talk accounts were affected.

FCC Lifeline and EBB consent decree (November 2023), a separate matter. The Enforcement Bureau's order DA 23-1078 (adopted and released November 29, 2023) resolved an investigation of TracFone Wireless, Inc. under the Lifeline program and the Emergency Broadband Benefit program, with a $17,487,000 civil penalty plus payment of a $6,013,000 Notice of Apparent Liability issued in 2020. The order names the company's SafeLink Wireless brand for Lifeline service and does not name Straight Talk. In paragraph 15 TracFone "admits ... that paragraph 9 contains a true and accurate description of the facts underlying the Investigation. No other admissions are made by TracFone." It is listed here because the same legal entity was the respondent.

Who operates Straight Talk, and how it relates to TracFone, Verizon and Walmart

Who runs Straight Talk. Straight Talk's Terms and Conditions (Version 202609) say they are an agreement between you and Verizon Value, Inc., "a Delaware corporation that maintains its principal place of business in Miami, Florida," and that "Straight Talk is a registered trademark of Verizon Value, Inc., a Verizon company." The older documents on this page name a different entity: the 2015 FTC order and the 2023 and 2024 FCC orders name TracFone Wireless, Inc. (the FTC caption says "also d/b/a Straight Talk Wireless"). Verizon's release of November 23, 2021 says Verizon completed its acquisition of TracFone Wireless, Inc. and TracFone's family of brands, listing Straight Talk, Total Wireless, TracFone and SafeLink. The documents checked do not state how the names TracFone Wireless, Inc. and Verizon Value, Inc. relate to each other, so this page uses each name only where its source does.

What it sells. The company's pages describe no-contract prepaid phone plans (Silver, Gold and Platinum Unlimited tiers are named in current offers), SIM kits for bringing your own phone, phones, home phone service, home internet, hotspots and tablets, with service on carrier networks. The Terms say the wireless networks that carry the service "are owned and operated by licensed commercial mobile radio service providers ("Carriers"), and not Straight Talk." The company says its base Straight Talk plan has had the "same price since 2009" and defines that claim as applying only to the base monthly price, not taxes, fees or add-ons.

Walmart. The home page links to "Find Us at Walmart," and the Terms treat Walmart purchases separately for returns (see the practical section above). Walmart is a retailer of the product; nothing checked describes Walmart as the operator of the service.

Ownership. The Terms call Verizon Value, Inc. "a Verizon company," and Verizon's 2021 release says it acquired TracFone Wireless, Inc. and TracFone's brands, which it lists as including Straight Talk.

Older Net10, TracFone and Safelink posts that do not concern Straight Talk are not counted here.

The themes block lists keyword counts across those posts (one post can match several): Billing, refill cards, charges and refunds: 105; Activation, number transfer (porting) and lost or changed phone numbers: 102; Customer service and call-center access: 96; Phones, defects, returns and warranty: 64; Service cut off, no signal or dropped calls: 51; Data limits, throttling and the unlimited plan: 37. Court record: 2013 and 2024 class actions and the 2015 FTC action

Class action over "unlimited" data (N.D. Cal. 3:13-cv-03440). Hansell et al. v. TracFone Wireless, Inc. was filed in July 2013 before Judge Edward M. Chen, who also handled the FTC action (the court's docket marks the two cases as related). The CourtListener docket shows an order granting preliminary approval of a settlement on February 20, 2015, and on July 2, 2015 an order granting the motion for final approval of the class action settlement and the motion for attorneys' fees, costs and service awards, with judgment entered the same day. An objector's appeal to the Ninth Circuit (No. 15-16784) was dismissed on the objector's stipulation by order entered February 18, 2016. The docket entries checked do not state the settlement amount, so none is given here.

FTC v. TracFone Wireless, Inc. (N.D. Cal. 3:15-cv-00392). See the regulator section above; the stipulated order was signed February 20, 2015.

Barcomb et al. v. TracFone Wireless, Inc. (S.D.N.Y. 1:24-cv-08710-NRB). CourtListener lists this class action as filed November 15, 2024. The court's order granting final approval says the settlement involved allegations in the plaintiffs' complaint relating to an incident in which, on or before December 2021, unknown hackers gained access to personal and account information of approximately 8,000 current and former TracFone customers and used it to have TracFone transfer victims' phone numbers to other providers. Those are allegations in the complaint, not findings. The Justia docket shows the order and judgment granting final approval, signed by Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald on February 3, 2026; it approves attorneys' fees, costs and expenses of $1,400,000, and dismisses the matter with prejudice and without costs except as provided in the settlement agreement. The official settlement website (tracfonesettlement.com, read October 6, 2026) says the class covers current or former TracFone Wireless customers, including Straight Talk, who were affected by the data security incident, that payments for approved claims were issued on April 9, 2026, and that uncashed checks become void after July 8, 2026. The documents checked do not state the total settlement amount, so none is given here.

Other court cases naming Straight Talk may exist; this section lists the matters found in the sources checked on October 6, 2026. Cases against other Verizon Value brands, such as the 2026 Total Wireless data-breach suits, concern a different brand and are not listed.

Is Straight Talk Legitimate?

Straight Talk's Terms identify Verizon Value, Inc. as the contracting company and a "Verizon company," and Verizon's November 2021 release lists Straight Talk among the TracFone brands it acquired. The documents on this page show a 2015 FTC settlement over "unlimited" data claims (TracFone neither admitted nor denied the allegations), a 2024 FCC consent decree with a $16 million civil penalty for three data breaches in which TracFone admitted the facts in paragraphs 8-13, a final-approved class settlement in 2015, and a 2026 final-approved class settlement over a data security incident (Barcomb v. TracFone Wireless). As displayed on October 6, 2026, BBB shows a D- rating with 2,583 complaints in three years and Trustpilot shows 1.2 from 2,103 reviews. The company's own pages state that plans are non-refundable, that unused service is lost when a plan cycle ends or a number is ported out, and that disputes go to individual arbitration or small claims. We did not verify individual complaints or any claim about the quality of service in a particular area; coverage varies by location and the Terms say the coverage maps are not a guarantee of coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel Straight Talk service?

The Terms and Conditions (Version 202609) say a customer who dislikes a change can "cancel at any time or simply not renew your Service," and that if you do not redeem a new plan before your Service End Date the account is deactivated and you may lose your number. Plans are described as non-refundable and without cash value. Customer Care is listed at 1-877-430-2355. The help-center topic lists we checked on October 6, 2026 did not show a dedicated cancellation article, and straighttalk.com's contact page returned "Access denied" to our browser, so channels listed only there were not read.

Does Straight Talk refund unused days or a plan I bought by mistake?

Section III of the Terms says "Plans have no cash value and are non-refundable," and that no refunds or discounts are given for unused service that expires after the Service End Date, for unused service if the phone is lost or stolen, or for plans bought that are not compatible with the phone. Section VIII adds that Straight Talk "does not allow returns or provide refunds for any SIM Kits or Plans." Starting a new plan cycle forfeits remaining minutes, data and service days under the Terms.

Can I return a Straight Talk phone bought at Walmart or online?

Per section VIII of the Terms, a phone bought at Walmart is subject to Walmart's return policy and Straight Talk will not process that return; a phone bought from straighttalk.com can be returned within thirty (30) days of delivery for an exchange or refund if it is in like-new working condition in original packaging, at the buyer's shipping cost, with refunds taking up to thirty (30) business days. The Terms also describe a limited warranty and say refurbished iPhones, certified pre-owned phones and Marketplace phones can be returned for a refund within thirty (30) days of purchase.

What do I need to move my number away from Straight Talk?

The Terms say you need the Number Transfer PIN Straight Talk provides plus certain account information, and that once the number transfers your Straight Talk service is deactivated immediately and unused service days are lost. The 2024 FCC consent decree with TracFone Wireless, Inc. requires port-out protections; its terms are summarized in the regulator section. If a number is transferred without your authorization, contact Customer Care at 1-877-430-2355 and consider an FCC informal complaint.

When can a Straight Talk phone be unlocked?

The Unlocking Policy effective July 31, 2026 says devices activated on or after January 20, 2026 need 365 days of active and paid service, and devices activated on or before January 19, 2026 need 60 days of active and paid service. It says there is no fee to unlock early and that suspending service pauses the timer for devices activated on or after January 20, 2026. Bring-your-own devices are not covered by the policy. You can check status by IMEI on straighttalk.com/device/device-unlock.

What was the FTC case about Straight Talk's unlimited data?

On January 28, 2015 the FTC announced a $40 million settlement with TracFone over advertising of "unlimited" data under brands including Straight Talk. The FTC alleged the company throttled or cut off data after fixed amounts in a 30-day period. The stipulated order says TracFone "neither admits nor denies" the allegations except as stated, and the court docket shows it was signed on February 20, 2015. A related consumer class action (Hansell v. TracFone Wireless) received final approval on July 2, 2015.

Who owns Straight Talk, Verizon or Walmart?

Straight Talk's Terms say Straight Talk is a trademark of Verizon Value, Inc., "a Verizon company," and Verizon's release of November 23, 2021 says Verizon completed its acquisition of TracFone Wireless, Inc. and brands including Straight Talk. Walmart sells the product and its return policy applies to Walmart purchases; the documents checked do not describe Walmart as the operator of the service.

What is the Reg and Telco Recovery Charge?

The Terms say the Reg and Telco Recovery Charge "isn't a tax, it isn't required by law, is not necessarily related to anything the government does, and is kept by us in whole or in part," and that effective November 1, 2026 it "will be set at 7% of eligible plans' monthly service charges." The Terms also mention a Federal Universal Service charge that is not a tax. Check your plan's Broadband Facts Label for the all-in price that applies to you.

Where can I file a complaint about Straight Talk?

Start with Customer Care at 1-877-430-2355. Under section I of the Terms a written notice of dispute to [email protected] must precede arbitration by 60 days. Outside the company you can file an informal complaint with the FCC (consumercomplaints.fcc.gov or 1-888-225-5322), report advertising issues to the FTC, or contact your state attorney general. As displayed on October 6, 2026, BBB shows 2,583 complaints in three years for its Straight Talk Wireless profile; BBB does not verify them.
