Ripoff, forced to pay for unneeded repairs or walk 4 hour home

Here is the letter sent to Just Brakes without no assistance or compensation given.

On Friday July 23 I stopped at the Just Brakes #14 off William Cannon in Austin Texas to have my brake pads replaced on my 1999 Dodge truck. I was greeted by Will Nobles who explained the cost to replace the front and rear pads would cost $99.88 plus tax. I agreed and authorized the repairs.

Approx. 15 minutes later I was asked to come into the shop and was introduced to Pete Martinez who was to be the shop foreman. Pete explained the drums and rotors needed to be turned and would not be an issue. I was also told that I needed to replace the front R and L calipers due to to a binding issue.

Pete also continued to explain the grease seals needed to be repladed due to reuising the old ones would cause the grease to leak. Pete, Will and myself then went to the rear brakes where Pete proceded to remove the rear dust cover from the wheel cylinder. This revealed no fluid leakage. Pete then placed his finger inside the wheel cylinder pushing it forward. This of course caused fluid to begin to leak from the front of the wheel cylinder when the front dust cap was removed. No fluid was noted to be leaking on the dust plate around the wheel cylinder prior to the tampering from Pete Martinez.

Pete, Will and myself then proceded to the R rear wheel where Pete proceded to repeat the same procedure with the same results. No fluid was noted to be leaking around the wheel cylinder or on the dust cover prior to the tampering. I was then presented with a estimate from Will Nobles showing a total cost of $457.00 which included disc springs that he admitted did not need to be replaced but he added anyway.

I explained to Will I was not going to pay for unnecassary repairs and explained that my Father-in-law was a well respected crew chief for a local racing team and if those additional items needed to be replaced I would confer with him and make that decision when the time came. I was told by Will that I HAD to have this work done due to safety issues. I told Will Nobles that I did not want the work done and to put my vehicle back together.

Will then stated that I needed to at least have the pads replaced for the original quoted price and I agreed. He then stated I should consider replacing the wheel cylinders for a price of $154.60 extra plus tax. I explained to Will Nobles that I did not feel they were needed to be replaced since they were obviously not leaking (due to the dry wheel cylinders and dry dust covers as well as no use of fluid) prior to Pete Martinez pushing his finger in the rear of the current cylinder breaking the seal and expeling fluid.

I returned inside to explain the sitiation to my wife and my wife and I repeated to Will Nobles that we did not want the wheel cylinders replace and to only replace the pads as originally agreed. Will Nobles then stated he could not do that due to safety restrictions and HAD to replace the wheel cylinders. My wife and myself repeated to Will Nobles that we did not want the additional work done due to we were more than capable of doing the work ourselves alot cheaper. Will Nobles insisted that he could not put our vehicle back together unless we have the wheel cylinders replaced. He the proceded to state the cost of the wheel cylinders would run $25.00 - $30.00 each and was trying to help us out by cutting the price by $30.00. Later is was found that the actual price of each wheel cylinder was $14.88 next door at the auto parts store.

Being from out of town and with no friends or family in town we where then forced to purchase the wheel cylinders against our wishes. I feel that Will Nobles forced us to 1. Purchase items we did not want. 2. Purchase items we did not need. 3. After presenting us with the blown up estimate refused to return our vehicle unless we agreed to his demands. After speaking with my father-in-law he stated we would still need to replace the grease seals due to possible leakage which were not replaced. Therefore I am requesting reimbursement in the amout of $154.60 plus tax for the wheel cylinders we were forced to purchase.

Please contact me directly ASAP via email or phone to resolve this matter in a timely manner. Thank you for your prompt attention.
