In March I entered the dealership with my "check-engine" light on. After replacing the O2 sensors and making one other small repair over several weeks of the light returning (the P0420 code) the dealership replaced the Catalytic Converter with the EXHAUST MANIFOLD COMBO Outlined in their Technical Service Advisory-M.I.L. ON" DTC P0420 dated July.
At the time of this first report the car had 61,000 miles (I had the car for 30,000 miles at this point). 18 Months later the check-engine light returned and when I returned to the same dealership I was told after diagnosis that the it was the CAT converter that needed to be replaced again (at a cost of $858 because I was not under the 80,000 mile warranty and the warrantied part from 2007 was only covered for a year (though ANY purchase of a CAT converter I would have made would have a minimum of a 5 year warranty (or 50,000 miles!) In addition, according to the Technical Service Advisory issued by the company the ECM is know to have problems and in fact states that if more than 1 calibration is done it can damage the ECM long - term.
It makes no SENSE that ANY car that has under 100,000 miles and has not been diagnosed with any larger engine issues would need two catalytic converters in the space of 2 years (and given that Toyota knows they have recurring issues with the ECM and this part, that they would be installing a part that is only warrantied for one year is AMAZING!
This is the 3rd toyota I have purchased over the last 20 years and will be my last as the company will not even reach out to explain whether recalibration of a new CAT (purchased and installed elsewhere) might damage the system (if it is not already according to the Service Advisory!)
