I went to Taylor Hyundai and asked to see theri Hyundai Tucson they had advertised for $169 per month for 84 months. The salesman "Sean Service" told me thats the GLS model right here. We took it for a test drive and fell in love with it. He said lets go look at some numbers.
We went into his office and we filled out a credit app. He came back with our credit report and them BAM! He hits us with the real information. The fine print is you need $4500 down and an intrest rate of 9%. I said we cant put $4500 down, he said well how about $2000 down and a trade. We verbally agreed to those terms, he said he would have to talk to his finance mgr.
He came back with a payment of $284 per month. I asked why such a high payment. He said " the model advertised for $169 is a GLS model, I said we test drove the GLS model. Then here comes more fine print The GLS model for $169 per month comes with a manual trans. No A/C, no power options, and no radio. I asked how can that be they are both GLS models they come with all the same options. He said thats the way it is.
I told him the payment was too high. He went back to his finance mgr and came back with another payment of$278 per month. Now they want $3000 down plus a trade, they were only offering $1500 for the trade. Ok so now we're up to $4500 down and a monthly payment of $278. I said still too high.
He went back to his finance Mgr and he came out to talk to us. He said the absolute best he could do on that model was $ 258 per month. I was more than willing to pay $230 per month but not $258 for a car that was advertised for $169.
My reason for willing to pay more was to get the model we test drove. They still wanted $258 per month PLUS $3000 down PLUS a trade of $1500 and then still finance the entire purchase price of $22,000. So they want me to take out a loan for $28,000 for a $22000 vehicle and still pay 9% intrest and tax tags title out of pocket. I'm not a super smart man but I know when someone is trying to screw me.
I called the finance MGR on it and raised a stink about the whole bait and switch. He said "oh thats illegal we cant do that" I said what the hell do you think youre doing? My wife and I finally took the credit app out of his hands, ripped it up and threw it on the floor and walked out chanting "Bait and Switch
