I recently had my first motor vehicle accident in 48 years of driving. I purchased a new car and, being an AARP member, saved $ 365.00 by choosing The Hartford Insurance plan which is endorsed by AARP. I received various pamphlets, etc. Describing the coverage. One clause read, "complete recovery cost for new cars". It went on to say that if I insured a "new" car, it had less than 15,000 miles on it / or I purchased it less than 15 months ago, and it was totaled, that The Hartford would replace it with the exact vehicle—model, options, etc." They deemed my car "totaled", but DID NOT replace it with a like vehicle.
When I brought this to their attention, they indicated that The Hartford's definition of a "new car" was one that had less than 150 miles on the odometer at time of purchase. My vehicle had 308 miles on it because it came from another dealership. My bill of sale says, "new", but they still wouldn't give me full replacement value for my vehicle. I indicated to them, that no one ever pointed this out to me at the time I took the policy out. They just seemed to dwell on the fact that my "new car would be replaced with a like car" if it was ever totaled. A rather snotty adjuster said to me, " I would have thought that you would read your entire policy when you received it. You would have seen the definition of what we consider a new car on the bottom of page 9".
The vehicle I had insured was paid for and now I had to replace it with a lesser model due to the fact that they approved me for $6,000 less than the original purchase price.
I am sorry that the AARP endorsed a company like this. I have informed them.
