Charge credit card for membership renewal without consent

I am writing to alert you to a problem that seems to be a general issue with corporations, in this case AAA. My husband had membership with AAA in which we did not renew. As it turns out, my credit card, which the company had on file for us, was charged for 2 years in a row, for renewing the membership without either my husband's consent or mine (the credit card holder).

This, in my opinion, is plainly fraud. If the consumer does not notice that his credit card was charged, he will continue to be charged for services he is not using. Although AAA agreed to refund the last charge they just placed on my account for next year's membership, they refuse to refund me for the previous year, because I had overlooked the charge, since I was away on vacation when the bill came.

Obviously, I am not going to file a claim for 52$, as I am sure, many other consumers will not, so the company keeps stealing people's money. Do we as consumers have to be constantly on guard and be unable to trust not your average internet business, but established companies, who steal without any legal consequences?
