Theft of valuable/expensive item

In March I rented a vehicle from U-Save Rentals in Bayonne. I returned the vehicle a day later. As soon as I arrived home (only minutes away) I realized I accidentally left a very expensive item on the seat of the vehicle. I immediately called U-Save. I told Paul (the rental agent/manager) that I left my valuable item on the seat and that I would be right back to pick it up. He told me, "Hold on, I'll call you right back, " leading me to believe that he was going outside to where I parked the vehicle (which was right in front of his store) to get the valuable item I left behind.

After 20 minutes had gone by and I had not received a call back, I called him back again and told him I would be there within 5 minutes. He hung up on me. I called back, thinking we were accidentally disconnected, but he said (In a very nasty tone) We're closed, and he hung up on me again. I went back to the rental store but the door was now locked.

The next morning, on my way to work, I stopped by USave and asked the rental agent/manager why he hung up on me and asked him for my valuable item that I left on the seat of the vehicle I rented the day before. I knew that their rental agreement reads that they are not responsible for any items left in their rental cars but it wasn't like I waited an entire day to contact them about the missing item, plus he kept hanging up on me. It was a matter of my returning home and calling him not 10 minutes later when the vehicle was parked right outside his door! I know for a fact that the rental agent/manager had to have found the item after taking the keys from me because they check their vehicles thoroughly before sending them off to the lot or car wash and because it was laying in plain sight right on the front seat. He just refused to return it to me.

I (very nicely) tried explaining to him that this was a very expensive and valuable item and asked him to please return it. He was extremely nasty, refusing to let me speak. Then he wrote the number down on a business card to their corporate office, slapped it on the counter, saying Here, call this number and tell them that Paul refuses to give you your expensive and valuable item back.

I don't care that their rental agreement reads that they are not responsible for property left in their vehicles because this was only a matter of ten minutes and that rental agreement does not give them the right to steal valuable property left behind when they have a chance to immediately return it to the rightful owner.

If this was an honest business then the rental agent/manager would have walked out the door, taken the item out of the vehicle, and held it for me knowing that I was on my way back to pick it up.instead, all I got was hung up on and my valuable item STOLEN from this business.
